Last year, Sony and Netflix released KPop Demon Hunters, a thrilling musical about demon hunters, and it quickly became a global hit. Fans have been hoping for a sequel, and now it’s confirmed – not only is a second installment coming, but there’s even more in store!
Netflix and Sony have just announced they’re making a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, and Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct. This project actually kicks off a new, long-term partnership with the directing duo, making it a perfect fit as their first collaboration. While we don’t know when it will be released, Kang hinted that this is just the first of many exciting projects to come from this world.
The KPop Demon Hunter Project Possibilities Are Endless

The story world offers a lot of possibilities. We could explore the backstories of characters like Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, learning about their lives before joining HUNTR/X. Or, we could go even further back in time and see what previous teams were like.
There are many directions the story could go. It could delve into the backstories of supporting characters or revisit old villains, given the rich history already established in the first film. Alternatively, new threats could be introduced in the present, perhaps connected to the honeymoon location, which still holds untapped potential. These stories could be explored in a full sequel or a shorter streaming series. Both Netflix and Sony seem to understand the wealth of possibilities available.
As a Korean filmmaker, Kang expressed how proud he is that audiences are eager to see more of the story and characters from his work. He hinted at a much larger world yet to be explored and said, ‘This is just the start.’
We feel a strong connection to these characters – they’re like family, and their world feels like a second home to us. We’re thrilled to continue their stories, give them new challenges, and see how they grow. We also want to keep innovating and exploring new ways to combine music, animation, and storytelling,” Appelhans explained.
Dan Lin, head of Netflix Film, praised the filmmakers Maggie and Chris for taking a creative risk with a story that was both personal and groundbreaking. He stated that Netflix aims to create beloved films, and they achieved that with what is now the most popular movie ever on the platform. Lin also expressed excitement about continuing the story and bringing more of the HUNTR/X universe to audiences worldwide.
At Sony Pictures Animation, supporting the unique and ambitious ideas of our filmmakers is our top priority,” say studio presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville. “Maggie and Chris had a truly original approach to this film, and audiences worldwide loved their story. We’re excited to partner with them again and help them bring their creative vision to life in the future.
KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.
