The world of streaming is always changing, and that means shows and movies frequently appear and disappear. HBO Max is no different. While the service added some great content in March, including the new show DTF St. Louis and several Spider-Man movies, it’s also removing titles. Soon, another show will be leaving, giving HBO Max subscribers only one week left to watch a popular Adult Swim special.
Adult Swim’s animated special, The Elephant, premiered on March 19th. This unique, 23-minute event is a collaboration between four renowned animation creators. The special is divided into three parts: the first created by Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time), the second by Ian Jones-Quartey (OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes) and Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe), and the third by Patrick McHale (Over The Garden Wall). It tells a story about finding yourself. The Elephant first aired in December and is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
Adult Swim’s The Elephant Is an Experimental Masterpiece
If you haven’t seen The Elephant yet, make time to watch it on HBO Max before it’s gone – you won’t regret it! This animated special is a stunning and unique work of art, bringing together incredible modern animation to create a dreamlike journey about finding yourself, past lives, and what it means to be you. It’s visually beautiful, blending different animation styles – from realistic cityscapes to charming storybook scenes – in a way that feels seamless. But The Elephant is more than just a pretty cartoon; it’s a deeply thoughtful story that tackles big questions about life and even offers a glimpse behind the scenes of the animation world.
As a huge animation fan, I was completely blown away by The Elephant. What’s really amazing is how well it all came together – it felt so emotionally resonant and complete, even though it was made in a really unique, almost piecemeal way. Critics loved it – it’s got a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 7.8 on IMDb. Isaiah Colbert from io9.com called it a “beautiful anomaly,” which I think perfectly captures it. Honestly, it left me wanting more – I saw one viewer online saying they’re already begging for another season, and I totally agree! It’s only three parts, so it’s a quick and really enjoyable watch – seriously, if you’re into animation, don’t miss this one.
Where to Stream The Elephant After It Leaves HBO Max?
Though The Elephant is being removed from HBO Max, you can still watch it! It’s available on Sling TV and the Adult Swim website, along with a 21-minute behind-the-scenes documentary called Behind The Elephant that shows how the project was made and what the creators thought of it. While it might eventually appear on another major streaming service, it hasn’t been announced anywhere yet.
