One Of the Best Co-Op RPGs Just Leveled Up In a Big Way

I have a lot of friends who live far away, so I often can’t play tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons with them. That’s why I’m really into cooperative RPGs that feel like playing with friends in person, rolling dice and all. Luckily, there are many ways to enjoy RPGs online, from virtual tabletops to games like Baldur’s Gate 3. Sunderfolk, which came out last year, quickly became one of the best options for recreating that tabletop experience virtually, and it just got even better.

I’m really excited about Sunderfolk! It started as a fun game to play with friends on the couch, but the recent 2.0 update has totally changed things. Now it’s so much easier to play online with anyone, and it feels like a complete RPG. It used to be a simple, D&D-inspired game night option, but now it’s a full-blown online co-op experience that’s super easy to pick up and enjoy.

Sunderfolk Adds Essential Features in 2.0

I’ll never forget discovering Sunderfolk. It originally came out as a unique blend of Jackbox Games and Dungeons & Dragons. Instead of using controllers, players used their phones to play, and the game had simple card-based rules, making it an easy and fun way to experience tabletop RPGs with friends. Sunderfolk received a lot of positive feedback and earned a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam. However, some players didn’t like using their phones as controllers, and it wasn’t always ideal for playing with others in the same room.

The 2.0 update for Sunderfolk significantly improves an already great virtual tabletop role-playing game. Released on March 10th, this update adds key features that make the game easier to use. Players can now choose to use a mouse and keyboard instead of touch controls, and importantly, they can host online multiplayer games directly within the app – no more complicated streaming setups needed for remote play.

These improvements have the potential to transform Sunderfolk from a great game for playing with friends in person into the top choice for cooperative RPGs online. What’s more, these changes were directly suggested by the game’s community, proving the developers are really paying attention to player feedback. I’m much more excited about the game after hearing about these updates, and there’s even more new stuff on the way! Sunderfolk 2.0 offers expanded gameplay and fresh content for both new and existing players.

A Balanced New Hero and New One-Shot Scenarios Give Sunderfolk Players More to Explore

The latest update to Sunderfolk adds new content like mouse and keyboard controls and online multiplayer. I got a chance to try out the new One-Shot Scenarios and a new hero, and I was really impressed. The update also expands your hero options with a new Vanguard class that feels well-balanced. If you often find it hard to build a good team in RPGs, like I do, this class can be a big help thanks to its strong movement and knockback abilities. Even knowing that, I still tried to create a team focused on magic! But it’s a fantastic addition for anyone wanting a more well-rounded Sunderfolk group.

The latest update to Sunderfolk includes a new hero and a set of linked scenarios for the One-Shot mode. These offer a satisfying gameplay length, improving on the previous, disconnected One-Shot missions by telling a continuous story and gradually increasing the challenge. I played the ‘Sacred Sand’ mission, which introduces new creatures and a challenging ‘Decay’ mechanic – it’s genuinely difficult! The combat requires careful strategy, and I was eager to continue… as long as I can protect the Sacred Bug and keep my team alive. Luckily, the game lets you adjust the difficulty if your team composition, like mine with a lot of magic users, struggles.

Sunderfolk is a really enjoyable game that combines the strategy of turn-based RPG battles with the immersive feel of classic computer RPGs. Instead of choosing actions directly, you use cards, which makes each turn focused and creates interesting tactical puzzles. The recent update is great, and adding online multiplayer and the ability to play without a phone are significant improvements to the experience.
