Invincible boss addresses major actor absence in season 4

Season 4 of Invincible promises even bigger stakes with the beginning of the Viltrumite War storyline, pulled straight from the comics. However, there’s a change: Aaron Paul won’t be returning to voice the character Powerplex. The show’s creator has explained the reason behind this casting switch.

I always felt so bad for Powerplex, or Scott Duvall as he’s also known. The actor who played him, you might recognize him from Breaking Bad, really brought a sense of tragedy to the character from the very beginning. It was heartbreaking to watch his story unfold.

Driven by revenge against Invincible for the loss of his sister and niece, Powerplex’s attack goes horribly wrong. He uses his electrical powers recklessly and tragically kills his own wife and baby in the process.

The character Powerplex appeared in several episodes during season 3 of Invincible, leading fans to believe Aaron Paul would reprise his voice role in season 4 if the character made a return.

Paul shared in a late 2025 episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast that he turned down the chance to return for season 4 because playing the character was emotionally draining. He explained that fully immersing himself in the role of Powerplex felt uncomfortable and unsustainable for his mental well-being.

TopMob asked Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, the creators and showrunners of Invincible, about Paul’s exit from the show. They indicated that the actor chose not to come back primarily due to scheduling and logistical challenges.

Kirkman explained that animation works differently than live-action filming. With live-action, scripts often need adjustments to give actors more to do and keep them involved in a project long-term.

“In animation, there’s a little bit more freedom in following the actual story.”

He went on to say that the Powerplex character still appears occasionally, but a dedicated episode centered around him would be a great opportunity for Aaron Paul to deliver a fantastic performance. However, it’s often challenging to bring the same actor back for just a short scene or two due to scheduling conflicts.

One of the biggest challenges is scheduling. Because we can’t guarantee our actors will be available whenever we need them for animation, we have to work around their other projects. Since we’re working with very popular actors, there will inevitably be times when they’re simply unavailable.

Throughout its series, Invincible has featured a star-studded cast, with well-known actors like Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, JK Simmons as Omni-Man, Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, Walton Goggins as Cecil, Gillian Jacobs as Eve, and Seth Rogen as Allen the Alien.

The animated series is a huge success for Amazon, and a fifth season is already planned for 2027. Plus, a video game called Invincible VS is coming out on April 30, 2026, and the first trailer gives fans a preview of the voice acting for the new character, Powerplex.
