As a huge Mortal Kombat fan, I think we can all agree that fatalities are what the game is known for – they’re not just cool, they define the whole experience! It actually caused quite a stir back when the first game came out, and even led to the creation of the ESRB. The series has always been about over-the-top violence, and what people find ‘gory’ is different for everyone. So, to rank the goriest fatalities, we didn’t just look at the newest games with the best graphics. Instead, we focused on which ones were the most disturbing and brutal in how they actually kill someone. We wanted to find the fatalities that are objectively shocking, not just visually impressive.
5) Kung Lao – “Vertical Slice”
The developers of Mortal Kombat II significantly increased the game’s violence with new characters and finishing moves. One particularly gruesome example is Kung Lao’s “Vertical Slice” fatality. This move involves Kung Lao using his signature hat to either slice off an opponent’s head or cut them cleanly in half. While both are brutal, the decapitation appears slightly less graphic. It shows Kung Lao swiftly slicing his hat through the opponent from head to waist, causing their upper and lower bodies to separate, with blood and gore spilling from the severed areas.
4) Ermac – “Mind Over Splatter”
One of the most disturbing finishing moves comes from the 2011 version of Mortal Kombat, performed by the character Ermac. Called “Mind Over Splatter,” it involves Ermac using his telekinetic powers to lift his opponent into the air. They hang there momentarily before Ermac violently rips off all their limbs while they’re still alive. He then finishes the gruesome act by slamming their head into the ground, completely crushing it. It’s a very graphic and satisfying move to use when playing with friends.
3) Sub-Zero – “Spine Rip”
The first Mortal Kombat game was highly controversial and played a key role in the creation of the ESRB, the system that rates video games to protect children from violent content. While the game was already known for its violence, Sub-Zero’s finishing move, the “Spine Rip,” particularly shocked many people, including lawmakers. Over time, the move has become even more graphic, but the basic idea – Sub-Zero delivering an uppercut that results in him ripping off his opponent’s head and pulling out their spine as the body collapses – remains disturbing. He then holds the severed head up in victory.
2) Mileena – “Face Feast”
Mileena debuted in Mortal Kombat II and is notorious for her brutal “Face Feast” fatality. The name itself is terrifying, and while her victims experience intense pain and fear, it’s thankfully short-lived. In Mortal Kombat XL, she performs this move by stabbing her opponent in the head with her sais, using a kick to the groin for leverage, and then ripping off their head. She then proceeds to… consume their face. After finishing, she casually drops the head to the ground and walks away, leaving a disturbing sight for onlookers.
1) Sheeva – “Skin Rip”
Man, I remember playing Mortal Kombat III and discovering Sheeva’s fatality – the “Skin Rip.” The name pretty much tells you everything, and honestly, if you’ve ever had the thought, ‘Wow, having my skin ripped off while I’m still alive would be terrible,’ then Sheeva’s not your character. She basically stomps towards her opponent, does a quick move, and all their skin just falls off, leaving their skeleton standing there screaming in pain. It’s seriously messed up, and definitely one of the most gruesome and disturbing fatalities in any Mortal Kombat game.
