Fortnite Save the World is going free-to-play: Release date, rewards and bonuses

Fortnite originally started as a game called Save the World. After almost ten years, Save the World is now available to play for free.

This game mode used to require a purchase to access the player-versus-environment content. Now it’s available to everyone.

Fortnite Save the World will soon be available for everyone to play for free. Here’s a rundown of when that will happen and what you can anticipate.

Fortnite Save the World goes free-to-play on 16 April 2026.

You can now sign up for the event on any device, and if you do, you’ll get some cool free items when it starts!

Players can earn rewards like the Save the World Hero, and existing players will also receive Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold.

Creators will still earn V-Bucks by finishing Daily Quests, responding to Mission Alerts, defending Storm Shields, and completing Challenges.

Unfortunately, you can no longer buy Save the World. Epic Games has stopped selling it to new players.

Fortnite Save the World free-to-play rewards and bonuses

Players can pre-register for the event by heading to this page on the Fortnite website.

Players who sign up before the game launches on April 16th will earn rewards as the community reaches certain goals. The biggest reward is a special character called Snowstrike, who comes with unique abilities.

  • Standard Perk: North Star
    • Throwing Stars will slow enemies for 4 seconds instead of dealing damage. Slowed-down enemies will explode for 167 base water damage if they receive melee damage or damage from another North Star explosion.
  • Commander Perk: North Star+
    • Throwing Stars will freeze enemies for 4 seconds instead of dealing damage. Frozen enemies will explode for 167 base water damage if they receive melee damage or damage from another North Star explosion.

Fortnite Save the World players who have already purchased the game will receive some extra rewards as a thank you for their continued support.

  • 1x Hero Supercharger – Promote a Hero beyond Level 50
  • 1x Weapon Supercharger –Promote a weapon beyond Level 50
  • 1x Trap Supercharger – Promote a Trap beyond Level 50
  • 5x Survivor Supercharger –Promote Survivors beyond Level 50
  • 1x Hero Recruitment Voucher – Recruit a Hero of your choice
  • 1x Weapon Research Voucher – Unlock a weapon of your choice
  • 10,000 Gold – Spend in the Event Store (to be renamed “the Exchange”) for valuable items
