Thor, the God of Thunder, is one of Marvel’s most powerful and significant heroes. While he’s famous for battling current threats as an original Avenger, he’s actually been defending Earth – known as Midgard – for over a thousand years, first arriving in the 9th century. Throughout his long history, he’s fought countless monsters, villains, and evil gods. He’s particularly known for his conflicts with his brother, Loki, and other Asgardian adversaries, but he’s also faced enemies from beyond his world, like the Gargoyle, Mister Hyde, and even Ego the Living Planet. Still, none of these villains compare to Thor’s ultimate foe.
Gorr the God Butcher first appeared in Jason Aaron’s Thor: God of Thunder comics. He was a uniquely powerful and destructive enemy, unlike anything Thor had ever encountered. It took three different Thors, working together across time, to finally defeat him – but not before he killed countless gods throughout the universe and conquered the divine realm in King Thor’s future. For the first few issues, Gorr remained an enigma, known only for wielding the incredibly powerful Necrosword. Thirteen years ago today, Thor: God of Thunder #6 revealed Gorr’s backstory and simultaneously introduced another of Marvel’s most dangerous and memorable villains.
A World Without a Name, Only Vengeance

Let me tell you about Gorr, a character whose origin story is truly heartbreaking. He came from a desolate world, bathed in eternal daylight, where life was a constant struggle just to survive. I could practically feel his desperation as I watched him witness unimaginable loss – his mother brutally killed before his very eyes, his wife taken by a sudden disaster, and finally, the agonizing death of his child. It was the final straw. Gorr, understandably, lost all faith, and was cast out to die. But fate had a twisted plan. Two gods literally fell into his lap, wounded and begging for assistance. Instead of offering help, Gorr, fueled by years of pain and abandonment, seized a divine weapon and committed a shocking act – he killed a god. It was a brutal, powerful moment, and it completely changed his path. This isn’t just a villain’s origin; it’s a tragedy that makes you almost understand his rage.
Gorr unknowingly possessed the All-Black the Necrosword, a weapon that gave him immense power. He used this power to travel the universe and kill any god he encountered. His quest eventually brought him to Earth, where he fought Thor. The battle pushed Thor to his limits, but he ultimately prevailed. This conflict established Gorr’s deep-seated hatred for all gods and ironically highlighted his own transformation into one, a point Volstagg keenly observed. Gorr didn’t realize he hadn’t simply connected with a deceased god, but with Knull, a powerful, ancient being of darkness, through the Necrosword.
The Greatest Retcon of Knull

This story revealed some of the history behind Gorr’s weapon, though he didn’t even know what it was called. He was unaware it was the All-Black, the very first and most powerful symbiote, created from pure darkness by Knull. Later, it was established that Knull was a dark god, eternally opposed by a being wielding the All-Light. These two gods – one of the Void, one of Light – have been fighting since the beginning of time. When they clashed on Earth, the symbiote was stolen.
As a huge Marvel fan, I have to say Gorr the God Butcher and Knull are easily two of the most compelling villains they’ve created in years. What makes them so great, for me, is that they’re both driven by this incredibly raw, powerful pain. Gorr is just a guy abandoned by his god, and Knull is this ancient, cosmic being wanting to drag everything back into nothingness. But the really cool part is learning how their stories connect – it’s a perfect example of a retcon done right. It actually enhances the lore and gives us even more to love about these two fantastic characters. Honestly, it’s one of the best story adjustments Marvel’s made in a long time.
