Square Enix has recently announced it will be releasing games on multiple platforms. This change in strategy appears to be a response to lower-than-expected sales of PlayStation 5 exclusive titles, such as Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
The publisher likely understood that delaying the release of its games on other platforms hurt sales, a trend other companies have also observed.
To be fair, it’s probably not wrong, and so pursuing a multiformat strategy makes sense.
The company has been frustrating PlayStation fans by not following through on its promises.
This week saw the release of Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The game was previously only available on the Nintendo Switch.
The fact that the game is included with Play Anywhere suggests a partnership with Microsoft, though we’re just guessing at this point.
This comes after the successful launch of Paranoramasight: The Mermaid’s Curse, which was previously released only on Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
Fans have also noticed several other inconsistencies. Recent games like Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, Harvestella, and Dragon Quest Treasures haven’t been released on PlayStation 5, and there are currently no announcements suggesting they will be.
To be accurate, games like Octopath Traveler have come to PlayStation after their initial release. So, Square Enix might argue they are keeping their word, as they do eventually release their games on most platforms.
In this specific case, we have no doubt Bravely Default will end up on PS5 eventually.
PlayStation 5 fans are noticing a pattern: if Square Enix is truly committed to releasing games on multiple platforms, as they claim, why are so many of their games now bypassing PlayStation consoles?
