As a huge slasher fan, I was excited to hear that Sean Cunningham, the original director of the first Friday the 13th back in 1980 (written by Victor Miller), actually has plans for another film! While he created one of the most iconic franchises ever, he hasn’t been directly involved in directing since Jason Goes to Hell in ’93. He did produce Jason X, Freddy vs. Jason, and the 2009 reboot, but it’s been a full 17 years since then, and the series has been pretty quiet. It’s great to know he’s still thinking about it, but when we’ll actually see a new Friday the 13th is still up in the air.
Sean Cunningham recently told TMZ that he’s developing a new Friday the 13th movie. He has a story idea for a film that would feel like the classic, earlier installments. Additionally, Cunningham announced that he and co-creator Victor Miller have worked out their differences. Even more excitingly, he hinted at a resolution to the long-standing rights issues that have prevented new sequels. A recent major deal in Hollywood is expected to solve the problem of two companies owning the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise, finally paving the way for another film.
When Could the New Friday the 13th Movie Arrive?

The ownership of the Friday the 13th movie rights is shared between Warner Bros. and Paramount, which has made it difficult to create a new film because both companies needed to agree. Now that Paramount owns Warner Bros., that problem is solved. However, a new Friday the 13th movie still isn’t likely to happen in the near future.
For the movie to move forward, both studios need to agree to a deal and officially start working on it. Currently, there’s just a basic idea for the plot, but no full script yet. The filmmakers plan to hire a newer screenwriter to write the script, focusing on themes of facing mortality – something the 84-year-old creator, Cunningham, feels he’s no longer able to connect with personally.
The proposed partnership between Warner Bros. and Paramount still needs approval from U.S. regulators before moving forward. Once approved, the combined company will undergo significant restructuring. Because of this, a new “Friday the 13th” movie is unlikely to be released before 2028. Currently, these plans are only being discussed by producer Sean Cunningham, and haven’t been confirmed by either studio.
