Chances are you’ve heard of Colleen Hoover – she’s become a hugely popular author over the last ten years. She’s written many bestselling novels, selling over 20 million copies in total. Her popularity really took off thanks to the BookTok community on TikTok, especially with her novel, It Ends With Us, which gained a large and dedicated fanbase.
Two years ago, Colleen Hoover’s work first appeared on the big screen with a movie starring Blake Lively and Brandon Sklenar. Since then, Hollywood has adapted several more of her novels, including last year’s Regretting You with Allison Williams, Dave Franco, and McKenna Grace. Later this year, the adaptation of Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, is scheduled to be released.
Of all the adaptations of her work so far, Colleen Hoover was most directly involved with the recent one, Reminders of Him.
As an executive producer, Hoover was on set during the entire filming process. This allowed her to see the actors portray her cherished characters and offer her creative feedback.
You know, being on the set of ‘Reminders of Him’ really shifted things for me as a filmmaker. I was talking to TopMob recently, and I realized how much it changed my whole approach to adapting my own stories for the screen. It honestly completely reshaped how I see filmmaking now – it’s like I’m looking at it with a totally new perspective.

She explained that this project was a completely new experience for her. Unlike previous work, she was involved throughout the entire process – from the initial planning stages and filming on set, all the way through to post-production editing.
Seeing the entire filmmaking process unfold and understanding how much effort it takes has completely changed my perspective. I’ll never watch a movie the same way again.
In the movie Reminders of Him, Maika Monroe plays Kenna Rowan, a woman who has just gotten out of prison and wants to reconnect with her daughter, Diem. Tyriq Withers stars as Ledger, her love interest. Although the film’s author closely watched the actors during production, both Monroe and Withers said it was a surprisingly relaxed experience.
Withers chuckled, saying, “Dustin [Hoover] wasn’t actually a bully, though he definitely played the part! It was wonderful having Colleen [Wingrove], the creator of the characters, on set. She really understood how I fit the role of Ledger and how Maika would play Kenna.”
“So yeah, when you have the author there, it was like, if she’s happy, then I’m happy.”
Monroe shared that working with Colleen was a wonderful experience. She described Colleen as very open to collaboration and someone who created a comfortable environment for sharing ideas. Monroe often bounced thoughts off Colleen, and Colleen was always encouraging. They quickly became close friends, and Monroe considers her to be exceptional.
Beyond Marilyn Monroe and Derek Waters, I was really pleased to see such a great supporting cast in Reminders of Him. Lauren Graham, Bradley Whitford, Rudy Pankow, Nicholas Duvernay, Monika Myers, and even Lainey Wilson all bring something special to the film.
