Netflix’s War Machine Is the War of the Worlds Replacement We’ve Been Waiting For

As a huge cinema fan, I’m really impressed with Alan Ritchson – he’s quickly becoming a major action star! He absolutely nailed the lead in Reacher on Prime Video, and there’s something about his cool, commanding presence and sheer size that reminds me of those classic heroes like Keanu Reeves and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now, he’s doing it again with a new sci-fi thriller on Netflix that’s currently at the top of everyone’s watch lists – the guy really knows how to draw an audience!

As a movie buff, I’ve been checking out War Machine, the new film from Patrick Hughes, who directed The Hitman’s Bodyguard. It’s got a great cast, including Dennis Quaid, Esai Morales, Stephan James, and Jai Courtney. And honestly, it’s really making waves! It jumped right to the top of Netflix, knocking Jurassic World Rebirth off its perch, which is a big deal. Critics seem to like it too – it’s sitting at a respectable 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. What I’m really enjoying is how it mixes intense war scenes with a cool, futuristic sci-fi vibe. It’s finding an audience where a lot of other streaming films haven’t, and that’s pretty impressive.

War Machine Is a Solid Homage to The War of the Worlds

As a long-time movie critic, I’ve always been fascinated by H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. It’s a story that’s been brought to the screen countless times, but two versions really stand out. Byron Haskin’s 1953 film is, in my opinion, the strongest adaptation. However, Steven Spielberg’s 2005 take on the story really captured the public’s imagination, becoming a massive blockbuster with over $600 million in worldwide earnings.

Many attempts to remake the original have fallen short of capturing its magic, including Prime Video’s recent version, which received a very poor 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, War Machine approaches the same story with a tighter focus, and this streamlined approach has resonated with audiences.

During a training exercise, a small team of Army Ranger hopefuls stumbles upon a hidden alien spaceship. The ship unexpectedly powers on and begins attacking their unit. Led by Ritchson, the team must survive and find a way to destroy the craft before a full-scale alien invasion overwhelms Earth.

Beyond the story of the invasion itself, what truly stands out in The War of the Worlds is the sheer ruthlessness of the alien attack. The aliens show no compassion, take no prisoners, and offer no chance of survival. They appear virtually unstoppable, creating a sense of despair for both the characters and the audience – mirroring the feeling of the original story that inspired it.

War Machine Sneaks in the Film’s Sci-Fi Plot, and it Works

Initially, War Machine appears to be a typical war movie, much like many others. The first part of the film feels very familiar. However, as the story unfolds and establishes its setting, you begin to notice subtle clues that hint at a hidden science fiction element.

The movie doesn’t reveal its true nature until about halfway through. If you go in knowing nothing about it, you won’t see the big twist until a shocking attack on the cadets. This works to the film’s advantage, though – the sudden change to exciting sci-fi action immediately grabs your attention and makes for a much more enjoyable experience.

Focusing the story on a single alien ship and a small team of soldiers keeps the movie’s scope manageable, unlike some other large-scale sci-fi films. It feels like a promising start, potentially setting the stage for a larger Netflix series down the line.

War Machine’s Story and Success Pave the Way for an Even Bigger Sequel

Because War Machine tells a relatively small story, the ending sets up a potential large-scale alien invasion movie, positioning Ritchson as the lead in what could be a successful sci-fi franchise. Fans have long hoped to see Ritchson star in a franchise, and a Netflix sci-fi action series could be a great fit.

While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a sequel yet, the director, Patrick Hughes, and star Ritchson are already brainstorming ideas for a bigger story. The first film left Ritchson’s character unnamed, so a second movie would likely explore his past, balancing character development with the ongoing war between humans and the alien invaders.

Shifting the focus from small details to the bigger picture will help flesh out the invading aliens, giving them personalities, reasons for their attack, and a clear plan – something we haven’t seen beyond their weapons so far. Considering its strong start within the first three days of release, it would be a missed opportunity for Netflix not to make a sequel.
