It’s easy to realize there are a lot of strange video games. While classics like Donkey Kong and other Mario games have odd concepts, we’ve grown accustomed to them. Today, a game needs to be truly unique to be considered weird, and luckily, many developers are constantly creating unusual experiences. These are often independent, or ‘indie,’ games, though even some major publishers experiment with strange concepts. There are tons of great options, but we’ve picked out five of the most unusual games, presented in no specific order.
1) I Am Bread – PC

Released in 2015, I Am Bread is a quirky platformer where you play as – you guessed it – a slice of bread! This isn’t your average bread slice, though; it can stick to things, and the goal is to navigate puzzles and reach the toaster. Watch out for obstacles like pets and dirty floors! The game’s unique humor and challenging gameplay made it a success, and it was released on all major consoles, including Android and iOS, offering plenty of ways to play.
2) Seaman – Dreamcast

Released in 1999, Seaman is a truly unusual video game. It’s a virtual pet simulator where you raise creatures called “Seamen” – they look like fish, but with human faces, and you can actually talk to them! You interact with them by feeding them and having conversations, using a microphone plugged into the Sega Dreamcast. It’s similar to Tamagotchi, but much stranger and more unsettling – and surprisingly enjoyable.
3) Mister Mosquito – PlayStation 2

If you dislike mosquitoes (and most people do!), but have ever wondered what it’s like to be one, then Mister Mosquito is the game for you. You play as Mister Mosquito, a tiny insect living near the Yamada family. The game makes humans appear huge compared to you, and your mission is to collect enough blood during the summer to survive the winter. You’ll have to sneak up on people, bite them for a quick meal (without getting swatted!), and then fly off. It’s a strange concept, but surprisingly fun!
4) LSD: Dream Emulator – PlayStation

Released in 1998, LSD: Dream Emulator lives up to its name. This exploration-adventure game from OutSide Directors Company is intentionally bizarre and doesn’t have a traditional goal. Simply interacting with objects whisks you away to completely new locations. The game wasn’t designed as a typical video game, but as a way to create interactive art, drawing heavily from a developer’s actual dream journal. It’s a surprisingly effective depiction of surrealism, but it’s more of an artistic experiment than a mainstream game, so it won’t appeal to everyone.
5) Shower With Your Dad Simulator – PC

Prepare for extreme oddity with Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015: Do You Still Shower With Your Dad? This fast-paced game puts you in the shower… with your 8-bit dad, for reasons best left unasked. It includes different game modes, pixelated anatomy, and a quirky mechanic where a child chases his father, building a “Dadstreak” to advance. It’s incredibly strange, but surprisingly, Shower With Your Dad Simulator is a popular hit on Steam, boasting thousands of positive reviews.
