Controversial Crunchyroll Anime Drops New Look at Season 5 Ahead of April Premiere

A popular, but often debated, anime series available on Crunchyroll is returning this spring with a new season. A new trailer has just been released, giving fans a first look at the upcoming episodes. As the current winter anime season nears its end, the spring 2024 schedule is quickly approaching, meaning fans won’t have to wait much longer for a fresh wave of new shows – including the return of some previously divisive favorites.

While not the most over-the-top anime out there, Rent-a-Girlfriend has become surprisingly controversial. Though it’s a romantic comedy, the series has stirred up more and more debate among fans as it’s progressed. The upcoming fifth season looks set to continue this trend, and a new trailer has just been released.

When Does Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 5 Come Out?

The fifth season of Rent-a-Girlfriend will begin airing in Japan on April 10th as part of the Spring 2026 anime lineup. International streaming details haven’t been announced yet, but the first four seasons are currently available on Crunchyroll. The opening theme song for the new season, “Non Scenario Etude,” is written and performed by Sora Amamiya, who voices Chizuru Mizuhara. The ending theme, “204-goshitsu,” will be performed by Nakigoto.

Season 5 of Rent-a-Girlfriend will have the same staff and cast as Season 4, and was initially planned as part of that season. The anime was originally going to adapt the Hawaii arc from the manga in two parts, but due to a delay in the first part’s release, the team decided to split it into a separate fifth season, which premiered shortly after.

What’s So Controversial About Rent-a-Girlfriend?

Although it might not always appear that way, the anime Rent-a-Girlfriend has consistently sparked debate among fans. The current fifth season is adapting the controversial Hawaiian arc from the original manga. While it’s a romantic comedy, the relationship between the main characters feels stuck, with little development despite them seemingly reaching pivotal moments in their stories.

The manga Rent-a-Girlfriend continues to run despite its length – even surpassing long-running series like Dragon Ball – and the story isn’t moving towards a resolution, particularly regarding the relationships between characters. This has led to a frustrating situation where fans are actively hoping certain characters don’t end up together, which is a bad sign for a romantic story.
