Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Buffy Reboot Is Canceled at Hulu

Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t be back to fight the forces of darkness after all.

Joss Whedon, known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has announced that the planned reboot of the show—originally intended for Hulu—has been cancelled.

She shared in an Instagram video on March 14th that Hulu has cancelled the planned Buffy: New Sunnydale series. “I’m really sad to have to tell you this, but I wanted you to hear it directly from me,” she said.

Sarah, age 48, will be an executive producer on the series, working with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, who also directed the pilot episode. Sarah expressed her gratitude to Zhao for the chance to return to her famous role.

Sarah said, “I honestly didn’t expect to be wearing Buffy’s boots again.” She explained that Chloé helped her remember how much she loves her, and how important she is to everyone present, adding that this recent development doesn’t change anything about those feelings.

But rest assured, the scream queen’s reverence for Buffy Summers remains as strong as ever.

She finished by repeating a famous line from the show: “Even if the world ends, you can still reach me.”

As soon as TopMob News found out the show was coming back – the original ran from 1997 to 2003 – Sarah expressed wanting to give the role a respectful and worthy revival, since she hadn’t played the teenage demon hunter in over twenty years.

It’s strange, but I have a lot to live up to—my own past accomplishments, that is,” she said to TopMob News in February 2025. “I mean, I set the bar, so I should be able to meet it.”

Although Sarah was initially reluctant to play the character she was known for again, she felt this potential return was finally a good idea.

I’ve always paid attention to what fans want, and I know many of you have been hoping for a ‘Buffy’ revival. But I wouldn’t move forward with it unless I was confident we could do it justice. I can assure you, we’re only going to make a new show if we’re sure it will be good, and we’re currently working towards making that happen.
