For nearly twenty years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought countless characters from Marvel comics to life, ranging from famous Avengers to lesser-known heroes. However, when it comes to villains, Marvel Studios has consistently fallen short. While characters like Thanos and Killmonger truly enhanced the films they were in, many other antagonists were simply forgettable. This issue was made worse during the ‘Infinity Saga’ because Marvel often killed off villains after just one appearance, preventing even poorly written characters from developing or improving.
The upcoming Multiverse Saga offers a chance to redeem some of the most compelling villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The films Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027) are based on the idea that alternate realities and timelines can bring any character back – even those who have died. And beyond just bringing them back, Secret Wars is predicted to completely reset the universe, potentially allowing villains to return as new versions of themselves, unburdened by past mistakes.
5) Malekith

Christopher Eccleston delivered a convincingly threatening performance as Malekith in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, but the film ultimately didn’t utilize his potential. In the comics, Malekith is a formidable and cruel enemy of Thor, known for a long, calculated plan to conquer all the Nine Realms—a story arc grand enough to potentially shape an entire phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the movie’s version of the character lacked that complexity. His goal was simply to cover the universe in darkness, and the film didn’t give him enough time on screen to make that motivation believable, especially after reshoots shifted focus to Loki and cut scenes that would have fleshed out the Dark Elves. This resulted in a villain who committed significant acts—killing Thor’s mother and almost destroying everything—but felt surprisingly unimportant to the overall story.
Malekith met an unceremonious end, crushed by his own ship at the end of Thor: The Dark World, fitting for how little the character was featured. However, if the Marvel Cinematic Universe revisits this storyline, Marvel could reintroduce a version of Malekith as a clever schemer, bringing together the most dangerous forces from across the Nine Realms to cause widespread chaos.
4) MODOK

MODOK’s introduction in the 2023 film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania suffered from two major issues. First, the filmmakers chose to connect the character to Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), the fairly standard villain from the first Ant-Man movie. The story explained that Cross had somehow survived being shrunk and was then transformed into the floating, mechanical creature by Kang (Jonathan Majors). Second, the movie never fully established what MODOK is as a character, leaving his portrayal feeling inconsistent.
In Marvel comics, MODOK began as George Tarleton, an AIM technician whose body was horrifically altered to contain a powerful, weaponized intelligence. He’s a uniquely unsettling character because he’s both ridiculous and frightening at the same time. However, the movie Quantumania mostly used MODOK for comedic effect, which diminished any emotional impact his story could have had, especially by ending it with jokes as he died. Because of the multiverse storyline in the MCU, there’s still a chance to introduce a MODOK more faithful to the comics—one whose disturbing physical form and brilliant mind make him a truly dangerous enemy.
3) Taskmaster

In Marvel comics, the Taskmaster, Tony Masters, is a mercenary with an incredible ability: he can perfectly copy anyone’s fighting style after seeing it just once. However, this gift comes with a sad drawback – he suffers from both short- and long-term memory loss. This unique and tragic flaw has made him a memorable villain in Marvel comics for over forty years. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow movie drastically changed the character, replacing him with Antonia Dreykov (played by Olga Kurylenko), the daughter of General Dreykov. This version of the character was a mind-controlled operative who didn’t speak, make her own choices, or have much of a personality. Even her ability to copy skills came from a brain implant, not a natural talent. While this change fit the movie’s themes about taking away people’s free will, it transformed a character known for his intelligence and professional skill into a silent, robotic figure.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really disappointed with how Taskmaster was handled, especially in Thunderbolts. It felt like a waste to kill off Antonia (Taskmaster) so early, barely giving her any lines after building her up for so long! I think Marvel has a real opportunity with Secret Wars – or even after – to really establish Taskmaster as this brilliant, manipulative mercenary. Imagine him training villains, being a true strategist, and constantly keeping heroes guessing. Honestly, I’d love to see Olga Kurylenko return – she deserves a better storyline after how underutilized she’s been so far.
2) The Leader

Samuel Sterns, played by Tim Blake Nelson, has appeared in two Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, but both times he hasn’t been used to his full potential. In the comics, Sterns is the Hulk’s greatest intellectual opponent. The films hinted at his transformation at the end of The Incredible Hulk in 2008, when he was exposed to Bruce Banner’s gamma-irradiated blood. After a 17-year gap, Captain America: Brave New World (2025) brought him back as a mutated and manipulative figure secretly controlling President Ross (Harrison Ford). However, his plan didn’t make much sense and wasn’t executed in a way that matched the character’s importance.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was a little disappointed with how they handled the Leader in Captain America: Brave New World. They didn’t make him the physically intimidating figure he is in the comics – he felt… small. But hey, at least he’s still around! They’ve got him locked up in the Raft with all the other big baddies, and that post-credits scene with Sam Wilson was a clear signal of things to come. It feels like they’re setting him up for something massive, like Doomsday or Secret Wars, where he can finally be the strategic mastermind he’s always been known as, especially with access to all those prisoners!
1) Kang the Conqueror

Kang stands out as the MCU villain with the most unresolved potential. Jonathan Majors gradually developed the character through appearances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, setting him up to be the next major threat after Thanos, spanning the entire Multiverse Saga. However, after Majors’ dismissal following a conviction, Marvel shifted focus to Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) for upcoming films, abruptly ending Kang’s storyline.
Kang is a fascinating and complicated villain in Marvel comics – a time traveler from the future, connected to characters like Reed Richards, and often his own worst enemy. However, the recent portrayal in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t capture that depth, presenting him as weak and ultimately defeating him in an unsatisfying way. The upcoming Secret Wars movie offers a chance to fix this. They could recast the role, introduce a different version of Kang, or even bring back the original actor, especially considering the legal issues surrounding him have been resolved. If done right, a Kang that lives up to his comic book origins could become one of the MCU’s greatest villain redemptions.
