Fantasy is an incredibly varied form of entertainment. It allows for limitless possibilities in terms of characters, cultures, and adventures, transporting audiences to worlds both familiar and completely unique. This broad genre includes many subgenres, like epic high fantasy, the rising trend of ‘romantasy,’ and the classic sword and sorcery. Stories featuring adventure, combat, magic, and often romance—like those found in sword and sorcery—are particularly captivating, making them ideal for adaptation into film and television, and fans are always hungry for new content.
I’m already getting excited about three upcoming sword and sorcery fantasy books slated for 2026! While most haven’t been released yet – one is actually coming out very soon – I’m already hoping they get turned into movies or TV shows. There aren’t a ton of sword and sorcery releases this year compared to other fantasy types, but these ones really grabbed my attention and I can’t wait to read more.
3) A Dance of Burning Blades by M. H. Ayinde

The second book in Ayinde’s Invoker Trilogy, A Dance of Burning Blades, comes out on August 11th. If you haven’t read it yet, the first book is A Song of Legends Lost. This series takes place in a world where nobility can call upon the spirits of their ancestors for help in battle. The story begins when a commoner unexpectedly summons a powerful spirit – one that could potentially end a long-standing war. Inspired by African cultures, the trilogy blends magic with ancient technology, offering a feel similar to Black Panther. Expect a captivating tale of political maneuvering, uprising, and vengeance, all wrapped up in a bit of mystery.
The first book, A Song of Legends Lost, sparked a rebellion, and the upcoming A Dance of Burning Blades will show that rebellion escalating across the Nine Lands. Expect a story of revenge as a brother seeks justice, while the king’s daughter—whose father’s actions ignited the conflict—secretly works to influence events. It’s a thrilling mix of political intrigue and intense action, and we’re eager to see it adapted for the screen as soon as possible.
2) The Wolves of War by John Gwynne

You might notice the image shows The Bloodsworn Saga, and that will become clear shortly. John Gwynne’s new book, The Wolves of War, begins a two-part series and will be released on November 3rd. While the cover art isn’t available yet, the story takes place in the same world as The Bloodsworn Saga and draws inspiration from Slavic mythology. It’s described as a journey into a land of dark forests, frozen rivers, ancient myths, and forgotten magic, where a young woman’s abilities will determine the fate of a kingdom.
I’ve been completely hooked by Gwynne’s The Bloodsworn Saga – The Shadow of the Gods, The Hunger of the Gods, and The Fury of the Gods are all incredible. He’s a master at building these richly detailed worlds and populating them with characters you genuinely care about, and his stories just feel so emotionally resonant. Honestly, it feels like prime material for a TV series or movie, and I’m already really excited about the possibility of seeing The Wolves of War adapted for the screen!
1) The Book of Fallen Leaves by A. S. Tamaki

Fans won’t have to wait long for Tamaki’s debut novel, The Book of Fallen Leaves, the first in The Autumn Empire series, which arrives in stores on March 17th. Early reviews are already generating excitement, with some comparing it to a blend of Shogun and Game of Thrones. Praisers have particularly highlighted the book’s immersive world and compelling characters, and many are hoping it will be adapted for the screen.
As a huge fan of samurai films, I’m really excited about The Book of Fallen Leaves. It’s a story about Prince Sen, who’s been exiled and is trying to get his family’s good name back. He’s helped along the way by a girl named Rui, a commoner who gets swept up into a massive conflict – we’re talking civil war and demons! It sounds like it’s got all the best themes – fate, getting revenge, and staying loyal – plus epic battles. Seriously, this story needs to be a movie!
