The initial trailer for HBO and DCU’s Lanterns is really intriguing, but it’s hard to tell if it’s giving us a genuine look at the show, or if it’s deliberately hiding everything about the story and the Green Lantern universe until the August release.
Trailers can often be misleading or ruin the surprise of a movie or show. They either don’t accurately represent the final product, or they give away all the best parts, leaving viewers underwhelmed. Based on its trailer, the new DCU show Lanterns seems likely to suffer from one of these problems.
Is There More Than Meets the Eye to Lanterns’ First Trailer?
There’s a hopeful idea that the first trailer for Lanterns is intentionally hiding its most exciting or unusual elements. This would be great for Green Lantern fans who want to learn about the established DC Universe history of characters like Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and the wider Green Lantern Corps – something the Superman series didn’t do by only portraying Guy Gardner as a joke.
It appears Sinestro, a character from Green Lantern, will be appearing multiple times in the show, and powers related to the energy rings haven’t been removed. However, the preview trailer might actually deter viewers if it gives the wrong impression. The trailer doesn’t strongly suggest a science fiction or comic book feel, even though the show may actually have those elements.
Keeping special effects and big battles secret could create a great surprise when the episodes air. However, if the show is promoted as a small, character-driven story, like HBO’s True Detective, revealing large-scale action would be a stark contrast. It all comes down to finding the right balance in trailers: showing enough to attract viewers, but still leaving some exciting things hidden.
HBO Has to Know Its Lanterns Trailer is Controversial
It would be a bigger disappointment if viewers expected Lanterns to hold back surprises, only to find the show lacked truly amazing moments. While a Green Lantern series avoiding space adventures would be concerning, the show’s inspiration from True Detective suggests it might aim for a more down-to-earth, realistic feel – which would be strange for a Green Lantern story.
If the trailer accurately reflects the show’s content, HBO and DCU can honestly say they were upfront about it. However, trailers often leave out key details, so viewers can still expect surprises when they finally watch the series.
It seems John will have to prove himself worthy of his Green Lantern ring, even though he hasn’t received it yet. Combined with Hal’s dismissive attitude towards the other Green Lanterns, this suggests the show will significantly alter established DC lore. The trailer doesn’t offer any explanation for these changes, making them hard to accept.
Ultimately, the problem lies with the Lanterns trailer. Whether it accurately represents the series remains to be seen, but a portion of the existing fanbase is likely to be disappointed either way.
Lanterns is currently scheduled to be released on HBO Max in August 2026.
