Okay, so I was really excited about the potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, and it seemed like things were finally gaining traction. But unfortunately, it’s now official – Hulu has decided not to move forward with the series. Total bummer, honestly.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who famously played Buffy, announced on Instagram that Hulu has cancelled the planned reboot of the show, titled ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale.’ She said she wanted fans to hear the news directly from her and expressed her disappointment.
I’m so grateful to Chloé Zhao for bringing back some wonderful memories – I never imagined I’d feel connected to those iconic boots again! She reminded me how much I cherish her, and how much she means to all of us. This situation doesn’t change any of that, and I promise, if things really go south, you can still count on me.
Zhao, the director of ‘Hamnet’, was originally set to direct the series. It seemed to be in development with a pilot episode planned for Hulu last year, but the project has now been cancelled.
The original show was groundbreaking and inspired many of today’s supernatural series, so there was a lot of anticipation for its comeback.
But why has the upcoming reboot been axed? Read on to find out.
Has the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot really been axed?

Yes, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has sadly been cancelled by Hulu.
Hulu has cancelled its planned reboot of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, titled ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale’. Even though they had announced a new cast, including Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the next slayer, the project won’t be moving forward.
Sarah Michelle Gellar shared an update with her fans in a video on Instagram, and with a touch of humor, joked that she’d still be available even during an apocalypse.

Hulu initially ordered just one episode of the show, but it would have brought back Sarah Michelle Gellar in her original role. Additionally, Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott were already set to appear in the series.
Despite the reboot being cancelled, there’s still a chance for more Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the future. A source told Variety that the studio has a lot of affection for the show and remains open to exploring other ideas related to the franchise. In short, they haven’t ruled out revisiting the Buffy universe.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer is available to stream on ITVX and Disney+.
