8 Years Ago, DC’s Best Sci-Fi Series Released (And We Need More)

Comic book heroes have become more than just the people they appear to be; they’ve become powerful concepts. Like all compelling characters, they begin as simple ideas that grow and change over time. But even as these heroes become well-defined, the core idea behind them remains, allowing for fresh interpretations. While reboots and reimagining are common across all media, comic book heroes experience this process more than most. They’re frequently stripped down to their fundamental concepts and then rebuilt as something completely new, often used to explore questions that didn’t even exist when the characters were first created.

Comic book heroes are often reimagined in different ways, and DC Comics calls these alternate versions “Elseworlds.” There are countless Elseworlds stories, ranging from those that closely resemble the main DC universe to those that are drastically different. Today, we’re celebrating the eighth anniversary of one of the greatest Green Lantern Elseworlds stories ever created: Green Lantern: Earth One. The first book came out in March 2018, and fans are eager for more after the first two volumes.

An Old Idea Given New Life

The Earth One series offers a fresh take on DC Comics, reimagining familiar concepts with a more realistic and intense edge. In this version, Hal Jordan isn’t a test pilot, but a space miner working in the near future. While exploring an alien ship his crew discovered, his partner accidentally activated a Power Ring, destroying their shuttle. Hal grabbed the ring and survived, but the surge of energy also awakened a dormant Manhunter robot. He destroyed the robot, but the resulting blast sent him hurtling through space. When he regained consciousness, he found himself on the alien world of Bolovax Vik, where he encountered another Green Lantern named Kilowog.

Kilowog told Hal that robotic beings called Manhunters ruled much of the galaxy and were actively hunting Green Lanterns. When a group of Manhunters attacked, Hal and Kilowog had to escape and search for other Lanterns to help them. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find anyone willing to join their fight. Things took a turn for the worse when Hal was captured by the Manhunters and brought to Oa, their home world. There, he discovered the Central Power Battery hadn’t been destroyed – it had just been suppressed. He used its power to break free and send out a call for help to all Green Lanterns across the universe.

The Lanterns responded to the crisis, and despite a final Guardian ordering Hal to destroy Oa and the Manhunters, they found a different solution. They channeled the immense power of the Central Power Battery to eliminate all the Manhunters on Oa, effectively restoring the Green Lantern Corps. Far away, the last remaining Guardian, upset that the Green Lanterns survived, began to enact his own plan by summoning his Yellow Lanterns. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Hal reunited with his former captain and shared a plan to fight back against their enemies.

A Sci-Fi Masterpiece with Comic Book Ideas

This comic brilliantly combines the core concept of Green Lantern with classic science fiction. It retains the exciting elements of space adventure while simplifying the more complex and unbelievable parts of the original story, creating a gritty world where power is everything and morality is gray. It’s not a story about traditional heroes; it’s about flawed, uncertain people striving to improve their lives and communities, even when they’re unsure how. The Green Lantern Corps isn’t presented as a force for peace, but rather as a symbol of connection between vastly different people.

What really makes this series stand out, besides the great storylines, is how it portrays the evolution of Earth. It wasn’t just more technologically advanced than our world, but also more flawed. This collection and the next one show Earth beginning to interact with the wider galaxy, becoming a distinct and intriguing part of it, full of potential for discovery. This series is exceptional, even within the Earth One collection, and it’s definitely worth continuing to see what happens in the universe it’s built.
