The latest installment raises the stakes with its villains, and the actors and filmmakers are now sharing details on how Samara Weaving’s character, Grace, becomes a target again.
The 2019 horror film Ready or Not ended with Grace seemingly escaping her nightmare after defeating the dangerous La Domas family. Now, in the new sequel directed by the same team, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Grace is once again the target of a deadly game, and this time, her sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) is caught in the crosshairs with her.
During an interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant at our SXSW event, directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett discussed the plans for Ready or Not 2. They revealed the sequel’s concept actually came from a scene that didn’t make it into the first movie, as Bettinelli-Olpin explained.
The idea for the sequel came from a post-credits scene in the first movie, which showed a group of families at a hotel conference. When the writers, Guy Busick and Ryan Christopher Murphy, realized a sequel might be possible, they all got together and spent a day brainstorming ideas to see what they could come up with.
Once we realized the story continued seamlessly from where we last stopped, that’s when we all got really excited and felt confident we could pull it off. It felt like something truly special.
The discussion moved on to how Ready or Not 2 begins immediately after the first film ends, even though seven years have passed since its release. Newton explained, “It doesn’t even feel like there’s a brief pause,” emphasizing, “There’s absolutely no time jump.”
Gillett describes how they developed their filming technique through a discussion with their cinematographer, Brett. Brett suggested trying to blend two shots together so smoothly that the transition would be invisible, and they wondered if it was even possible.
Actors Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood, who star as villains in Ready or Not 2, shared their reactions to seeing the sequel recreate the ending of the first film. Gellar praised the visuals, saying, “It looks so amazing.” Wood then wondered if the directors had used any footage from the original Ready or Not in the sequel’s opening scene.
Bettinelli-Olpin points out there’s a smooth transition in the film, and Gillett elaborates that some visual effects were needed to achieve it. He specifically highlights a seamless cut after Grace’s final line, ‘In-laws,’ and credits the VFX artists at Lola for making it happen, saying, ‘Thank you. Thanks to the VFX artist at Lola.’
The trailer for Ready or Not 2 offers a quick glimpse of how the movie begins, but Samara Weaving, Grace Wood, and Sarah Gellar have hinted that there’s more to the scene than meets the eye, praising the impressive filmmaking techniques used. Wood explained that the opening features a seamless transition, literally passing the baton from one shot to the next. She specifically highlighted a dynamic shot where the camera is attached to her character as she falls, calling it a particularly exciting moment.
Gellar says it’s a particularly well-executed shot that flows naturally into the next scene. Grace then moves directly into the ambulance, and Wood described the transition as amazing.
Wood appears to be the leader of a new group of Satan worshippers in the upcoming sequel, playing a character called The Lawyer. The trailer shows that the story expands beyond the La Domas family, with four competing families now all trying to kill Grace and Faith—this time, to become the new leaders.
The sequel to Ready or Not features a cast including Shawn Hatosy, David Cronenberg, Olivia Cheng, and Nester Carbonell, alongside returning stars Weaving, Newton, Wood, and Gellar. The movie, releasing on March 20th, leaves the fate of Grace and Faith uncertain, but it’s clear they’ll face significant challenges.
