Despite a recent increase in popularity on streaming services, and Hollywood’s fondness for bringing back old favorites, a continuation of the show is unlikely.
I was reading an interview with Robin Tunney, and she addressed the possibility of bringing The Mentalist back to television. For those who might not remember, the show was a crime procedural that originally aired on CBS from 2008 to 2015, running for seven seasons. Sadly, even though it’s been over eleven years since the finale, there aren’t any current plans for a revival. It’s a bit disappointing, but at least we have the original episodes to revisit!
Robin Tunney Isn’t Interested in The Mentalist Revival
I’m so excited to see what Robin Tunney is doing with her new project, Ugly Cry, which is debuting at South by Southwest! She also recently talked about her time on The Mentalist, and it got me thinking about Teresa Lisbon. She played such a strong character – a former senior agent who led the Serious Crime Unit, and of course, her relationship with Patrick Jane was a big part of the show. It was cool to hear her reflect on that role.
When asked if the show could be brought back, Tunney said she wasn’t sure, but noted that audiences enjoy crime shows with a focus on investigations, and that their series was also known for its humor.
When she landed the role, she initially hesitated, revealing she used to be scared of police officers. Despite her apprehension, she ultimately took the part, describing it as a turning point that gave her more creative freedom. She expressed gratitude to the show’s fans and how it positively impacted her family.
Tunney said she’s happy people are watching the show and enjoying it, but she wasn’t interested in being part of The Craft reboot. She mentioned having this conversation with her Ugly Cry co-star, Ryan Simpkins.
The Prison Break star shared that he’s excited to move on to new projects, while still being grateful for the opportunities he’s had. He’s thankful for his success in the industry, but always wants to try new things. He supports others who enjoy revisiting past work, like the recent revival of his show, but it’s just not something he’s personally interested in. He is, however, happy it’s on Netflix, as it helps with his children’s education.
The Mentalist Became a Streaming Hit
The television series The Mentalist was very popular when it first aired. Created by Bruno Heller, the show centers on Patrick Jane, played by Simon Baker, a former fake psychic who uses his incredible ability to read people to help the California Bureau of Investigation solve murder cases. He works alongside his supervisor, senior agent Teresa Lisbon. Over its seven seasons, the show received a strong audience rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Starting March 1st, the show gained renewed popularity on its new streaming platform. Crime dramas continue to be a hit with viewers, and fans quickly rediscovered The Mentalist.
The Mentalist is streaming on Netflix.
