5 Supervillains Who Made Heroic Sacrifices

Superheroes in DC and Marvel often make the ultimate sacrifice to protect people and defeat villains. But surprisingly, villains sometimes die as heroes too. After years of causing harm, some realize the error of their ways and choose to do the right thing. They might sacrifice themselves to stop an even greater danger, or to prevent their own destructive plans from succeeding. These moments demonstrate that anyone is capable of changing and finding redemption.

Look, I’m a huge comic book fan, and I know death isn’t really death in this world. But honestly, when some of these villains go out making a heroic sacrifice? It’s awesome. Even if they inevitably pop up again later, doing bad stuff, those moments of selflessness really show there’s a decent person buried somewhere inside them. It makes them way more interesting characters, you know?

5) Starro

Starro the Conqueror, a being once feared throughout the universe for wanting to control all life, surprisingly became a hero. In the story Justice League: No Justice, both heroes and villains teamed up against incredibly powerful cosmic threats called the Omega Titans. Encouraged by Martian Manhunter, Starro used his mental powers to soothe billions of beings during an evacuation. After ensuring everyone’s safety, he bravely attempted to stop one of the Omega Titans by physically attaching himself to it, but the Titan was too strong and destroyed Starro. Despite failing to stop the rampage, Starro ultimately sacrificed himself to protect others.

4) Doctor Octopus

One of the most memorable Spider-Man stories of recent years is Superior Spider-Man. It began with Doctor Octopus switching bodies with Spider-Man, seemingly killing the hero. However, Doc Ock vowed to continue Spider-Man’s work and protect New York City. As the new Spider-Man, he was a much harsher and more aggressive crime fighter. It was later discovered that a part of Peter Parker’s consciousness remained hidden within his original body, buried in Doc Ock’s mind. Though reluctant at first, Doc Ock eventually understood that only Peter Parker could stop the rising threat of the Goblin Nation. In a selfless act, Doc Ock allowed Peter to regain control of his body, effectively erasing his own mind.

3) Loki

During the “Siege” event, Loki came to regret his actions. He tricked Norman Osborn, the leader of the Superhuman Defense Initiative, into attacking Asgard after it appeared over Oklahoma, using a team of villains called the Dark Avengers. Loki hoped this attack would force the Asgardians to return to their home dimension, but he didn’t realize how dangerous one of the Dark Avengers, Sentry, truly was. Sentry’s dark side, known as the Void, began to take over, threatening Asgard and the entire universe. Loki attempted to help the Avengers fight the Void with his magic, but ultimately, he was destroyed. This version of Loki died permanently and was later replaced by a younger, more virtuous version of the God of Mischief.

2) Doomsday

I always thought Doomsday, the monster who famously killed Superman, was beyond saving – a purely destructive force. But it’s amazing to learn that a future version of him actually evolved! He became this incredibly intelligent being called the Time Trapper. And in the story DC K.O., he actually fights with the heroes against Darkseid! It was heartbreaking when Superman fell in battle, but Doomsday stepped up in the most incredible way. He used his own power to bring Superman back to life, sacrificing himself in the process. It’s just… wow. The creature once known only for ending Superman’s life gave everything so that Superman – and the whole universe – could live. It’s a truly powerful and unexpected redemption.

1) Executioner

Skurge, known as the Executioner, spent most of his life working for the villain Enchantress. However, he died a hero. In the story “Like a Bat Out of Hel,” the Executioner chose to make amends for his past by helping Thor and a group of Viking warriors rescue trapped souls from Hel. When they succeeded, Hela, the goddess of the underworld, attacked with her undead army to prevent their escape across the Gjallerbru bridge. Though Thor volunteered to stay and fight, the Executioner knocked him unconscious and selflessly took his place, holding off the entire undead army with just two machine guns so the others could flee. His courageous sacrifice earned him a place in Valhalla.
