One Piece Creator Explains Why Season 2 Is Wackier
According to Oda, the first season of the live-action series prioritized showcasing the characters’ human qualities over the more fantastical elements of the story. He explained that the goal was to create a relatable and grounded narrative. However, for the second season, he directed the team to embrace the manga’s more imaginative aspects as the story progresses, allowing Luffy to credibly face stronger enemies and introducing viewers to the wilder side of the source material. This change in approach was a deliberate decision.
Adding more fantastical elements to the story also made it easier for Oda to accept the live-action adaptation of his characters. Initially, during the first season, he focused heavily on how closely the live-action Luffy matched his manga version, often pointing out inconsistencies in the script. However, as he saw the show come to life, his perspective on the live-action characters began to change.
One Piece’s Live-Action Series Continues to Change
After seeing the finished footage, Oda felt confident that Iñaki Godoy was a great fit for the role of Luffy. This allowed the team to refine their understanding of what Luffy, as portrayed by Iñaki, could and couldn’t do after the first season. They developed a shared understanding of his interpretation of the character, which made collaboration much easier. Overall, fans have been very positive about how the live-action series is adapting the larger story elements of One Piece.
The show’s second season takes some liberties with the storyline from the original One Piece manga, and creator Eiichiro Oda has pointed out some favorite moments, like Luffy’s memorable singing scene with Laboon. The goal was to strike a balance – keeping the grounded feel of the first season while also embracing the more lighthearted and unpredictable nature of the manga.
