As a longtime fan, I’ve always been impressed by Elijah Wood‘s diverse career – he’s tackled everything from massive blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings and Sin City, to smaller, critically acclaimed indie films like Wilfred and Green Street Hooligans. But honestly, there’s one early horror film of his that fans – myself included – are really hoping gets a sequel. I recently had the chance to chat with Wood after a reunion with a former co-star, and naturally, I had to ask him about the possibility!
Wood recently shared how much he enjoyed reconnecting with his former co-star, Shawn Hatosy (known for Animal Kingdom and The Pitt). He hadn’t seen Hatosy since promoting their movie The Faculty back in 1997 or 1998. He described it as wonderful to work with him again. They also discussed the possibility of a Faculty sequel. While a reboot was announced at one point, it never materialized, and Wood isn’t sure what the current plans are. He mentioned there were plans for a sequel in the past and that he thinks it would be fantastic to revisit those characters and the story.
The Faculty is Teen Horror Perfection
Released well ahead of its time, the horror film The Faculty remains a standout to this day. For years, there’s been talk of bringing the story back, and Variety reported last year that a revival was officially in development with Robert Rodriguez producing. The film follows a group of high school students trying to survive an alien invasion that begins with the principal and teachers, who start infecting students one by one. An unlikely team of teenagers – including Josh Hartnett, Clea DuVall, Jordana Brewster, Usher, Elijah Wood, and Shawn Hatosy – must work together to stay alive.
Besides the news that Drew Hancock will be writing the script for the remake, and that Miramax is producing it, very little is known about the project, leaving fans eager for updates. It will be fascinating to see how the new film is approached, especially since the original The Faculty’s strong 90s vibe is a key part of what makes it so beloved and a cult classic.
