While not everyone loves it, Assassin’s Creed has a dedicated fanbase for good reason. The series has arguably become overblown, with huge worlds, repetitive tasks, and stories that have strayed from what made the original games so compelling. However, Assassin’s Creed remains unique in its ability to offer incredibly detailed virtual tours of historical periods, and at its best, it delivers experiences rarely found in other video games.
People continue to enjoy Assassin’s Creed games, even the weaker ones, often finding even the simplest parts of them comforting and familiar. There’s one game, however, that was heavily criticized when it first came out and ultimately led to a major overhaul of the entire series: Unity. While many consider Unity to be one of the worst Assassin’s Creed games, I actually think it’s a fantastic game – and the best one in the series, deserving of much more recognition.
Assassin’s Creed Unity Is A Misunderstood Masterpiece

The biggest problem with the initial release of Assassin’s Creed Unity was its poor technical condition. To be blunt, the launch was incredibly buggy – as bad as, or even worse than, Cyberpunk 2077. Players experienced everything from awful textures and lag to numerous, obvious glitches and simple errors. It stands as one of the worst video game launches ever, and clearly showed that quality control for Assassin’s Creed was severely lacking at the time.
Despite its flaws, this game is truly special. It features some of the most beautiful and realistic city environments ever created in a video game, and its parkour system remains the best in the series. The combat and stealth mechanics are also a significant improvement on the original Assassin’s Creed style. While the story isn’t perfect – like many Assassin’s Creed games – it delivers some unforgettable moments, including a stunning infiltration of Notre-Dame that alone makes the game worthwhile.
Man, even now, years after it came out, Assassin’s Creed Unity still gets a bad rap because of how rough it was at launch. It’s a shame, because they fixed a lot of the big problems with patches, and I honestly think it’s a really great game that just didn’t get the love it deserved. Unlike games like No Man’s Sky or Cyberpunk 2077, which managed to turn things around and win people over, Unity kind of faded into the background. But I think it’s finally getting another chance to show everyone what it’s really about, and that’s awesome.
2026 Is The Best Time To Play Assassin’s Creed Unity

With the Assassin’s Creed series facing challenges, many fans look back to its strongest titles hoping for a return to form. While Black Flag is frequently praised as the best in the series and a great place to start, I believe Assassin’s Creed Unity is actually the superior choice, particularly for those wanting to see the incredible scope and detail the series is capable of. Despite its rocky launch, Unity represents Ubisoft at its best, offering a unique gameplay experience through its impressive environment and game design – something no other Assassin’s Creed game has quite matched.
While games like Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows show Ubisoft’s tendency to create overly large but empty worlds, Unity stands out with its detailed yet focused recreation of Paris. The city feels truly alive, filled with interesting things to discover. Simply walking through the streets, with the French Revolution brewing in the background, is incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. I haven’t felt this immersed in a video game world in a long time, and Assassin’s Creed Unity delivered that experience.
The best time to play Assassin’s Creed Unity is now, in 2026, thanks to a recent major update from Ubisoft. This update has thankfully brought renewed attention to this overlooked game and significantly improved the experience, even more than previous patches. The current version of Unity is now the definitive way to play – it’s smooth, beautiful, and incredibly fun. While it still has some typical Ubisoft quirks, it’s a truly captivating adventure from beginning to end. I highly recommend giving Unity a try to form your own opinion about the criticism it received at launch and to experience one of the most impressive city environments in gaming history.
