Wunmi Mosaku is having a fang-tastic time at the 2026 Academy Awards.
Actress Susan Kelechi Watson, who is currently pregnant with her second child, attended the awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 15th. She wore a stunning emerald green Louis Vuitton gown and is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the hit horror film.
Before the celebration, Wunmi shared details about her working relationship with her colleague, Hailee Steinfeld, who is expecting her first child with her husband, Josh Allen.
The 39-year-old explained to Zuri Hall during Live From TopMob Oscars 2026 that the long nights filming often felt like a dream. To pass the time, they played lots of card games, and he even taught the cast his favorites: Rummikub and Bananagrams.
Wunmi, who is competing for an Oscar against Amy Madigan (from Weapons), Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another), and Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), shared that things sometimes got competitive on set, particularly with one of her fellow actors.
She explained that they were all very competitive, particularly Jayme Lawson. (You can see photos of all the stars at the 2026 Oscars here.)
As a huge fan, I’m so thrilled for this Nigerian-born actress! The Oscars are the perfect ending to what’s already been an amazing awards season for her. She’s incredibly private about her family, which I respect, and she previously told me how blown away she was by the positive reaction to her performance as Annie in Sinners. It’s just fantastic to see her getting this recognition!
Wunmi shared with The Hollywood Reporter that seeing dark-skinned and full-figured women celebrated in the film was a heartwarming experience. She explained that hearing people express joy and say they needed to see this kind of representation—to feel seen and understood, and to be reminded of their inherent worth—was incredibly healing. It was a welcome change from the harmful stereotypes often portrayed online and in media.
The movie also allowed her to collaborate with director and writer Ryan Coogler. He’d seen a preview for her HBO show, We Own This City, and immediately decided she was the right person for the role.
Wunmi explained that Ryan Murphy told her about a moment when he immediately thought of her for a role, saying, ‘Oh, there’s my Annie,’ and then wrote the character with her in mind. However, she still had to audition to ensure they would work well together, as he likes to build a close, family-like atmosphere on set and wanted to be sure they’d be a good fit.
