Moon Knight & Daredevil: Born Again Prove The MCU Is Ready For Its Darkest Superhero Team-Up

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been really impressed with both Moon Knight and Daredevil: Born Again. Knowing the creators behind those shows and their previous work, I honestly think Marvel’s finally gearing up for a seriously dark and complex team-up – and I’m so ready for it!

Even though it was short, lasting only six episodes, Moon Knight is still considered a standout series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s TV collection. It was the first superhero show directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and they’ve since gone on to direct other popular MCU shows, including season 2 of Loki and Daredevil: Born Again.

Before working on superhero projects, Benson and Moorhead gained recognition for their critically acclaimed, thought-provoking horror films. Given their background in horror and their skill at crafting compelling, darker superhero stories, they seem ideally suited to direct a truly memorable adaptation of a major superhero team-up.

After Moon Knight & Daredevil: Born Again, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead Are Ready For A Midnight Sons Adaptation

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are now known for directing episodes of popular shows like Moon Knight, Loki season 2, and Daredevil: Born Again. However, they first made a name for themselves with unique horror films such as The Endless, Spring, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. The Endless is still considered one of their best independent films, and there are plans to create more stories within that same world.

Their talent for blending science fiction and horror is also apparent in their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows. Season 2 of Loki, for example, presented complex ideas about physics and time travel in a visually stunning way, similar to the style they used in earlier films like The Endless, Resolution, and Something in the Dirt.

The team proved with Moon Knight that they excel at combining a hero’s external adventures with their internal emotional battles, a technique they’ve used effectively in films like Synchronic and Spring by focusing on personal character conflicts. Now, with season one of Daredevil: Born Again, they’ve successfully created a realistic and gritty take on the superhero genre.

Sometimes, Daredevil: Born Again feels less like a Marvel story and more like a top-notch legal thriller. Overall, Benson and Moorhead have repeatedly shown they can bring a unique, independent filmmaking style to even large franchise projects, making them ideal choices to direct a Midnight Suns/ Midnight Sons adaptation.

This superhero team is unlike any other, such as the Avengers, Thunderbolts, or Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s made up of heroes who often have troubled pasts and get their powers from mysterious sources like magic, family history, ancient curses, or even deals with demons. Members have included characters like Blade, Ghost Rider, Magik, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, and occasionally The Punisher and Daredevil.

Stories featuring the Midnight Sons often explore morally gray areas. The heroes are willing to break rules – even those governing supernatural forces – if they believe it will ultimately serve a greater purpose. Some Midnight Sons comics also draw inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, pitting the heroes against powerful, ancient beings similar to those in his Cthulhu Mythos.

There are also chapters in the comics that derive from Junji Ito and John Carepenter’s works.

The Midnight Sons comics blend supernatural horror with superhero action, making them a great fit for the atmospheric and cosmic style of filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. If Marvel decides to adapt Midnight Sons for live-action, Benson and Moorhead should be at the top of their list of directors to consider.

A Live-Action Midnight Sons Would Be An Incredible Addition To The MCU

As a critic, I’ve definitely noticed audiences are starting to get a little tired of the same old superhero stories. It feels like we’ve seen it all before! Because of this, things are getting really interesting in the genre. Instead of straightforward heroes, we’re seeing more projects – like the upcoming Thunderbolts and the new Daredevil: Born Again – that are focusing on characters who aren’t exactly ‘good guys,’ exploring those messy gray areas. It’s a refreshing change of pace, honestly.

I’ve been so excited to see Marvel really embrace horror lately! Movies and specials like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Werewolf by Night have definitely leaned into that darker side, and honestly, it feels like a natural progression. To me, it’s a brilliant way to pave the road for them to finally bring a Midnight Sons adaptation to life – it just feels right!

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really hoping we get a Midnight Sons project. It feels like the perfect way to bring in characters like Blade and Ghost Rider – heroes I’ve been wanting to see on screen for ages – without the studio having to commit to solo movies right away. I’ve heard whispers about a Midnight Sons adaptation for a while now, but so far, it’s just remained a rumor – we haven’t seen any real movement on it yet.

With the positive reception of series like Daredevil: Born Again and Moon Knight, the studio might be open to letting Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead direct a project.
