For over two decades, Disney and Pixar have dominated the Best Animated Feature category at the Academy Awards. But in 2026, that long winning streak came to an end with the surprising victory of KPop Demon Hunters.

The animation industry has shifted a lot lately, with Disney facing tougher competition, especially from Sony Pictures. Recently, Sony and Netflix scored a major win with their upcoming film, KPop Demon Hunters, scheduled for 2026, ending a long run of successes for Disney.

Disney & Pixar Have Dominated The Best Animated Movie Category Since It Was Created

After the Academy Awards created a Best Animated Feature category in 2001, Disney quickly became the leading studio in that field, consistently winning awards with films from both Disney Animation and Pixar.

Pixar became known as a consistent Oscar winner thanks to popular films like Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. Around the same time, Disney Animation also released successful movies such as Frozen, Zootopia, and Big Hero 6.

For almost twenty years, Disney and Pixar consistently won the Best Animated Feature award every couple of years. However, this year Sony and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters surprised everyone by winning instead of Disney’s Zootopia 2 or Pixar’s Elio.

2026 Marks Disney’s Fourth Year In A Row Losing The Best Animated Movie

Interestingly, Disney’s most recent win for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards was for Encanto in 2022.

Recently, animated films have enjoyed a remarkable run of success, with wins from studios and creators around the world. In 2023, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio won the Oscar, and in 2024, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and The Heron brought a major international victory for the renowned Studio Ghibli. Continuing this trend, the independent Latvian film Flow surprised everyone with its beautiful and distinctive visuals in 2025.

I wasn’t shocked at all when KPop Demon Hunters became a huge hit in 2026 – it was already taking the world by storm and everyone knew it would be massive! It seems the pattern of this franchise just keeps repeating, and honestly, I love it.

As a huge animation fan, I was really surprised to learn something interesting about the Oscars. Disney just had a win, which is great, but it actually broke a bit of a record! It’s the longest they’ve ever gone without winning an Academy Award – four years straight, which is a first for them. It’s kind of a big deal when you think about how consistently they’ve been recognized in the past.

Disney and Pixar consistently create popular and critically acclaimed films, but competition in the animation industry has increased significantly recently. It’s likely that Disney can no longer automatically expect to have the biggest animated hit every few years.
