John Cusack Makes Rare Appearance to Honor Rob Reiner at Oscars 2026

It’s a sure thing that John Cusack was going to honor Rob Reiner. 

After a touching tribute to the late director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, by Billy Crystal at the 2026 Oscars in December, actor John Cusack attended the ceremony with his Sure Thing costar, Daphne Zuniga, to honor their memory.

On March 15th, at the 98th Academy Awards held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Rob was honored by several of his old friends from Hollywood, including Billy, John, and Daphne, who joined him on stage.

The tribute event brought together many stars from Rob Reiner’s films. From his first movie, This Is Spinal Tap, came Michael McKean and Christopher Guest. Also in attendance were Jerry O’Connell, Will Wheaton, and the cast of Stand By Me, along with Fred Savage, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and Carole Kane from The Princess Bride.

Billy was joined by several of his former costars, including Meg Ryan from When Harry Met Sally, and Kiefer Sutherland, Demi Moore, and Kevin Pollak from A Few Good Men. Kathy Bates, known for Misery, and Annette Bening, from The American President, also made appearances.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Rob and Michele Reiner. It’s just heartbreaking. Their son, Nick Reiner, has entered a not guilty plea to charges of first-degree murder – a truly difficult situation for everyone involved. So many in Hollywood, and beyond, are sharing how incredibly special Rob and Michele were, and the impact they had on so many lives. It’s a really tough time for their friends and family.

In December, during an interview on The Joy Reid Show, John described Rob as someone who was charismatic, talented, and generous.

John went on to say that he was a truly caring person. He had a gift for making others feel valued, loved, and safe.

Indeed, following Rob’s passing, John noted in a post on X that he was “a great man.”

It’s been a really tough time, and I was so saddened to hear about the loss of Rob and Michele. I know so many in the Hollywood community were deeply affected, and several of Rob’s close friends – including Larry David and Albert Brooks – joined me in sharing our grief with a heartfelt statement.

Friends of Michele and Rob Reiner described them as a powerful and dedicated couple who spent their lives working to improve the lives of others. In a statement released in December, they said the Reiners were a uniquely inspiring and generous force, and that they would be deeply missed.
