Michael B. Jordanis going from sinner to winner at the 2026 Oscars.
The actor known for his role in Sinners won his first Academy Award on March 15th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. He received the Best Actor award for his performance playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the hit horror film, and the audience gave him a huge ovation when he accepted the statuette.
He expressed his gratitude to everyone present and watching at home for their support throughout his career, saying he truly felt it. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the ceremony saw him explain that he’s driven to succeed because of their belief in him, and he thanked them for continuing to support him. He promised to keep improving and striving to be his best self.
Michael, nominated for an award alongside Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura, gave a special thanks to his parents. His father even traveled from overseas to be there for this career milestone.
Seriously, you guys know how much my mom means to me, and now my dad’s here too! He actually flew all the way from Ghana just to be with us. It’s… it’s just incredible, honestly. I’m so unbelievably happy they’re both here supporting me.
At 39, his win also makes him the sixth Black actor to receive the Best Actor award, following in the footsteps of Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. He acknowledged these pioneering performers, as well as Halle Berry—the first Black woman to win Best Actress—calling them all “giants.”
Michael, age 39, was considered a strong contender for Best Actor at the Oscars. He’d recently received an award at the Actor Awards just two weeks before, where he thanked his fellow nominees when accepting the honor.
He expressed how honored and grateful he was to be nominated alongside people he deeply admired and loved. He praised their work and the impact they had on their profession, calling the experience incredible.

During awards shows, Michael also spoke highly of the people he worked with on Ryan Coogler’s film, emphasizing how well everyone collaborated on set.
He explained to TopMob News in January that working on set feels collaborative and energetic, with everyone feeding off each other’s creativity. He described it as a close-knit, family-like atmosphere.
The film’s positive reception has made Michael and his team even more proud of their work. As Michael said, they are “really grateful and happy that everybody still loves what we’ve done.”
