
The planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been cancelled. Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on Instagram that Buffy: New Sunnydale won’t be moving forward, disappointing many fans. Now, Chloé Zhao, who directed the pilot episode, is sharing details about why the show was scrapped.
Although many popular shows are getting rebooted or revived, director Chloé Zhao wasn’t surprised when the Buffy revival was canceled. She shared this on the 2026 Oscars red carpet (as reported by Variety), where she was promoting her film Hamnet. Jessie Buckley later won Best Actress that night. Zhao explained she had anticipated the cancellation, stating:
I really enjoyed working with Sarah Michelle Gellar and everyone on the team. We feel a strong responsibility to honor the original series and stay true to what fans love. We believe everything happens for a reason, so we’re staying positive and open to whatever the future holds.
