What is Mr Nobody Against Putin about?

Mr. Nobody Against Putin follows a Russian school’s transformation as educators are compelled to stage pro-government events and teach a revised curriculum designed to support the invasion of Ukraine.

Over two years, events coordinator Pavel Talankin filmed a documentary at Karabash Primary School #1, revealing how propaganda and the effects of war have gradually infiltrated everyday life in Russia.

Because teachers in Russia were required to record and submit videos of ‘patriotic displays’ to show they were following government rules, Talankin was able to film secretly without raising suspicion. He then collaborated with American producer David Borenstein to create the film from the footage he collected.

Since premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2025, the film has earned widespread praise and many awards, including an Oscar.

Where is Pavel Talankin now?

As filming went on, life in Russia became increasingly challenging for Talankin.

In a Sundance Institute article, Jordan Crucchiola wrote that when the risks increased for Talankin – who displayed a peace flag in his workplace – the filmmakers began arranging for him to leave Russia and apply for asylum in Europe.

Talankin managed to leave Russia, but the article points out he can’t go back to see his loved ones until the government fundamentally changes.

Recent Russian laws enacted following the invasion of Ukraine, like the so-called ‘traitor law’ which could have resulted in a life sentence for someone involved in the film, have significantly limited the freedoms of Russian citizens, making documentaries such as ‘Mr Nobody Against Putin’ all the more crucial.
