5 Recently Announced Games That You Won’t Play for Years

Announcing a new game is a big event, particularly when fans have been eagerly waiting for it. However, developing video games, especially large-scale ones, often takes a long time. It’s common for games to take a couple of years to come out after being announced, but some take much longer. Here are five recently announced games that won’t be available for several years.

1) Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic

Whenever a new Star Wars game is revealed, fans get incredibly excited – and Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is no exception. Announced at the 2025 Game Awards, the game is being described as a spiritual successor to the beloved Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. While details are still scarce, this connection has definitely caught the attention of fans. However, despite an impressive teaser trailer, it looks like we’ll be waiting a long time to actually play it. Current estimates suggest the game won’t be released until after 2030.

2) Cyberpunk 2

Despite a rocky start, Cyberpunk 2077 became a very popular action role-playing game. So, it wasn’t surprising when CD Projekt RED announced a sequel, currently known as Cyberpunk 2, in October 2022. However, development seems to be moving very slowly. The last update in May 2025 revealed the game had entered pre-production. Considering the scale of the project and the studio’s focus on The Witcher 4, it’s unlikely Cyberpunk 2 will be released before 2030 or 2031.

3) Alien: Isolation 2

The Alien series has many beloved games, but Alien: Isolation, released in 2014, really surprised everyone. It captured the true feel of the Alien films, emphasizing a desperate struggle for survival against a single, relentless Xenomorph. After ten years, Sega and Creative Assembly announced Alien: Isolation 2 in October 2024, and fans are thrilled about the next installment. While still in early development, the game isn’t expected to be released until around 2028, which seems reasonable considering it took four years to make the first Alien: Isolation. Let’s hope that timeline holds true!

4) Ōkami 2

Ōkami is a gorgeous action-adventure game originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2006. It became very popular thanks to its beautiful art style and has since been made available on many different platforms. While a related game, Ōkamiden, came out later, a true sequel, Ōkami 2, wasn’t announced until 2024. Development has been underway ever since, but Capcom hasn’t shared much information about the game’s progress. There’s no official release date yet, though rumors suggest it might not be available until 2030, or even later.

5) Fallout 5

It was always expected that Bethesda would eventually create a new Fallout game, given how popular the series is. However, Bethesda doesn’t usually share details about upcoming projects early on, so news about Fallout 5 took a while to surface. It wasn’t formally announced, but mentioned in 2022 while discussing The Elder Scrolls 6. Currently, Fallout 5 is a lower priority until Elder Scrolls 6 is completed, meaning it likely won’t be released before 2030, and more realistically, sometime in 2031 or later.
