As a big movie fan, I was pretty disappointed with the 2026 Oscars. It felt like the show quickly shifted away from celebrating films and got bogged down in political discussions, which wasn’t what I tuned in for. It’s frustrating when Hollywood’s biggest night doesn’t really focus on the movies themselves.
At the 98th Academy Awards, while most winners focused on movies, several people used their time on stage to talk about important issues like conflicts around the world, American politics, and President Trump. This continued a tradition of using the awards show as a platform for political statements.
Conan O’Brien hosted the awards show at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, but political discussions often took center stage, sometimes eclipsing the awards themselves.
During the awards show, actor Javier Bardem unexpectedly started his speech by making a direct political comment before revealing the winner of the Best International Feature Film award.
“No to war and free Palestine,” he said.
Javier Bardem was also seen wearing a pin from a 2003 protest against the Iraq War, suggesting he deliberately wanted to express his political views.
Political Speech Continues With Best International Feature Winner
Following the win for Best International Feature by his film, Sentimental Value, director Joachim Trier used his acceptance speech to continue addressing political themes.
He concluded by quoting James Baldwin, reminding everyone that all adults share responsibility for the well-being of all children. He urged listeners not to support politicians who don’t prioritize this idea.

After speaking with reporters, Trier explained his comments further and pointed to several conflicts happening around the world.
He stated that we are currently seeing an unprecedented amount of information come to light regarding harm done to children in various ongoing conflicts.
He added that he believes politicians need to work together more closely.
I’m not involved in politics, but I think it’s important for everyone to work together – regardless of political party – to better protect children who are caught in conflict zones.
Documentary Winners Focus on Gun Violence and War
Political themes continued throughout the evening in the documentary categories.
The brief documentary, All the Empty Rooms, tells the story of children lost to school shootings by focusing on their empty bedrooms. It included heartfelt statements from the family of one of the victims.
Jackie Cazales was just nine years old when she tragically died in the shooting in Uvalde, her mother, Gloria Cazales, shared. Sadly, gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children and teenagers.

The winner of the Best Documentary Feature award, Mr. Nobody Against Putin, spoke about the war in Ukraine and the dangers of authoritarian governments.
Director David Borenstein said the film serves as a cautionary tale about the weakening of democratic systems.
“Mr. Nobody Against Putin is about how you lose your country,” he said.
The film’s subject, Pavel Talankin, used his speech to call for an end to global conflict.
He pleaded for an immediate end to all conflicts, saying it was necessary for the sake of our future and our children.
Borenstein caused some disagreement behind the scenes when he drew parallels between political developments in the US and Russia.
“[Donald] Trump was moving a lot quicker than [Vladimir] Putin moved in his early years,” he said.
Jimmy Kimmel Takes Shots at Trump…Again
Jimmy Kimmel, a late-night talk show host with a long-standing public disagreement with President Trump, included political humor in his presentation of the documentary awards.
At one point, he mocked media censorship.
He pointed out that some countries, like North Korea and, surprisingly, CBS, don’t believe in allowing people to speak freely.

Jimmy Kimmel also made a joke about the documentary awards, referencing his recent fascination with the surprisingly successful film Melania, which features First Lady Melania Trump.
“Oh man, is he gonna be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this.”
Even the Host Warned the Night Could Get Political
Conan O’Brien, who hosted the Oscars, jokingly admitted at the start of the show that political topics would probably be discussed.
He gave a heads-up that the evening might turn political, explaining that Kid Rock was holding a separate, unofficial Oscars event at the Dave and Buster’s nearby.

O’Brien recently made headlines when he told guests at his Christmas party not to call 911 regarding Nick Reiner, the son of director Rob Reiner, just before Nick was accused of killing his parents.
Although O’Brien eventually spoke more earnestly about working together internationally and the importance of film during challenging periods, the event largely followed a predictable format.
Hollywood’s Political Stage
It’s common for political messages to be shared during the Academy Awards. Over the last ten years, the ceremony has seen celebrities more and more frequently using the event to express their views on topics like elections, international affairs, and important social problems.
As a movie fan, what worries me is that the biggest awards shows seem to be focusing on everything but the actual movies and the art of filmmaking. It feels like they’re losing sight of what really matters!

It feels like every Oscars ceremony now includes speeches and jokes that focus on politics—and a lot of movie fans are getting frustrated with it.
The 2026 Oscars proved, yet again, that Hollywood isn’t afraid to include political statements during its most celebrated event, whether viewers appreciate them or not.
