I’ve been watching the second season of the live-action One Piece on Netflix, and it’s exciting to see Luffy and the Straw Hats enter the Grand Line. The creator recently talked about how he chooses actors, and it’s clear they needed a much larger cast this season because the Grand Line introduces so many new places, friends, and enemies with each episode. It’s definitely expanding the world we saw in the first season.
I was listening to the official Netflix podcast for One Piece and Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the manga, talked about how they cast the show. He explained that it wasn’t really about checking off a list of requirements. Instead, he was looking for a certain feeling from the actors during their auditions – something that just clicked. It wasn’t a very logical process, he admitted, but more about how the actors made him feel when they performed.
One Piece Creator Explains Live-Action Casting Process
Oda explained that he casts actors by reviewing their photos and audition tapes, without meeting them face-to-face. He looks for a certain quality within the actor that aligns with the character they’d be playing – when he finds it, he knows immediately if they’re right. Physical appearance is also a factor; he can tell when an actor truly embodies the role. It’s more of a gut feeling than a logical decision, and it’s difficult to put into words. This approach has clearly been successful, as Oda has high praise for the entire cast, particularly the main Straw Hat crew.
Oda expressed his continued amazement with the actors portraying the Straw Hat crew, saying their performances are incredibly accurate and a perfect fit for each character. He’s been consistently impressed with the cast since the beginning of the live-action series, and his positive reaction continues with the new season. Both fans and Oda himself are enjoying the show.
One Piece Creator Praises New Characters in Live-Action Cast

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, was very impressed with some of the new actors in the live-action series. When discussing his favorite casting choices for One Piece: Into the Grand Line, he specifically praised Charithra Chandran, saying her performance is a highlight. With Chandran playing an even bigger role in the third season, currently being filmed, viewers can expect to see much more of her in future episodes.
Netflix is currently producing the third season of One Piece, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet. The creator, Oda, has confirmed that this season will conclude the Alabasta storyline, which began in the second season. Depending on how things go, the show could potentially cover even more of the story.
