5 Great Alternate Robins You’ve Never Heard of, Ranked

Most people would agree that Robin is the most iconic superhero sidekick. Sidekicks aren’t as common these days, but the original Robin, Dick Grayson, was a huge reason they were so popular in the past. He not only encouraged other heroes to work with partners, but he also became essential to Batman’s crime-fighting efforts. Since Dick Grayson, several other characters – including Jason Todd and Damian Wayne – have taken on the role of Robin, and many are well-known to fans.

As a huge DC fan, I always thought Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake were the only Robins… but I was so wrong! Turns out, the DC Universe is full of characters who’ve taken on the Boy Wonder role, or something very similar. There’s Drake Winston from the Tim Burton Batman movies, and even a Robinbot over in the Justice League of China! But honestly, none of these other Robins are as famous as the ones we all know and love. I recently dug up five really cool Robins you’ve probably never heard of, and I’m excited to share them with you.

5. Robin of Zur-En-Arrh

Many Batman fans know about Zur-En-Arrh, Bruce Wayne’s strange alternate personality. But it’s less known that when Zur-En-Arrh took over, he actually created his own Robin. After trying and failing to get Damian Wayne to join him, Zur-En-Arrh cloned Bruce Wayne and rapidly aged the clone to become his sidekick. Sadly, this new Robin aged uncontrollably and didn’t live long. Bruce ultimately cared for him in his final days, making for a tragic, yet fascinating, piece of Robin’s history.

4. Jenny Wren

Anita Jean is an unusual character in Batman’s history. While not officially a Robin, she was one of Bruce Wayne’s first partners, and he considered training her as his official sidekick. However, Bruce dismissed her after she killed a criminal who knew his secret identity. Believing herself betrayed, Anita faked her death and later resurfaced as the villain Jenny Wren, seeking revenge on Bruce and all the heroes he’d trained as Robins. Though she’s only appeared in one story, the concept of a former ally turned villainous Robin is a compelling one.

3. Robinbot

Okay, so Robinbot is really unique, and the story behind him is fascinating. He wasn’t built for just anyone – he was created by China’s Batman, Baixi Wong! Baixi originally wanted his sister to be his partner, but when she went down a bad path, he built Robinbot instead. And let me tell you, this bot was ready. Baixi packed him with incredible strength, serious fighting skills, rockets, and all kinds of cool gadgets. Plus, he’s a total information machine – constantly sharing facts with the Justice League of China, even when they don’t ask! It’s a bit much sometimes, but hey, you gotta love his enthusiasm.

2. Drake Winston

Many fans of Tim Burton’s Batman movies are aware that Marlon Wayans was originally cast as Robin in Batman Returns, but the character was later removed from the film. Although Wayans never played Robin on screen, a character based on his vision appeared in the Batman ‘89 comic book series. This series introduced Drake Winston, a talented mechanic and animal enthusiast who became Robin after meeting Batman. While it’s disappointing Wayans didn’t get to play the role, Winston successfully filled that space and brought the character to life in a different way.

1. We Are Robin

You probably know Duke Thomas, also known as the Signal. But did you know that he wasn’t the only one to use the name Robin? After Batman seemingly died during the “Endgame” storyline, several young people in Gotham decided to take matters into their own hands. They formed a group called “We Are Robin,” dressing in Robin’s colors and symbol to protect their city. Though they lacked the training and equipment of Batman’s official Robins, they were determined and courageous. Duke led them so well that he was eventually asked to officially join the Bat-Family.
