Conan O’Brien Jokes Bathroom Update Saved Liza Powel O’Brien Marriage

Conan O’Brien has important advice on how to not flush away a relationship.

Shortly after finishing his hosting duties at the 2026 Oscars, the comedian discussed another achievement: his enduring marriage to Liza Powel O’Brien. He credited their success to a surprisingly simple secret – having separate bathrooms.

Conan recently told Vanity Fair that having separate bathrooms was key to a successful marriage. He and his wife shared this insight during an interview at the magazine’s post-Oscars party, explaining that it really helps a relationship thrive.

The 62-year-old, married to Liza since 2002, explained that shared interests help a marriage last.

And based on Liza’s reaction, it appears he may be onto something.

“I don’t hate it,” she quickly added. Conan pointed out, “Saying you don’t dislike something is the same as saying you like it!”

The actor, who shares 22-year-old Neve and 20-year-old Beckett with Liza, then repeated his main point, emphasizing, “I think that’s key, very key.”

After almost 25 years of marriage, Conan and Liza, both 55, have clearly figured out the secret to a lasting and happy relationship. Conan always knew Liza was the person he wanted to spend his life with.

They first met in 1999 when she was a copywriter at an advertising agency. Conan visited the agency to film a piece for his show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, about particularly bad advertising, and he immediately felt a connection with her.

In a 2012 interview with Piers Morgan, he recalled footage existing at NBC of the moment he first fell in love with his wife – captured on camera.

The late-night host remembered immediately connecting with Liza, who is now a successful playwright.

In a 2020 interview on The Michelle Obama Podcast, Conan explained that when he starts talking to someone he likes, he stops trying to be funny and focuses on getting to know them better.

After speaking with her alone for about twenty minutes, I left the room. We were taking apart the equipment when she walked out, and we continued our conversation in the lobby.

You know, it’s funny – everyone loves to talk about how my husband and I first met, and there’s actually video of it! But he’s playfully admitted he’s a one-and-done viewer. He’s seen it once, and that’s enough for him, apparently! It’s a sweet little story, and I always get a kick out of reminding him about it.

She shared on the Inside Conan podcast in 2022 that he prefers to remember a certain experience rather than rewatch it. She found it endearing, but also wondered if he was worried that revisiting it might change his feelings about it.

Ever since they met, the couple has been together constantly, and she’s supported Conan as he hosted the Oscars for the past two years. She even helped him get ready for the show both times.

Conan told Vanity Fair that he used to practice new comedy material on his wife for about four months, often late at night, around two in the morning.
