22 Years Later, GameCube Game Lives on With Switch Remake

Today, March 16th, marks the 22nd anniversary of a beloved Nintendo GameCube game that many remember fondly. Luckily, fans can now enjoy a remastered version of this classic on the Nintendo Switch, and it will also be playable on the upcoming Switch 2 thanks to backward compatibility. While the remake is available on PC and other consoles too, Nintendo enthusiasts will likely be the most excited to revisit this gem.

Exactly 22 years ago today, Marvelous Interactive and Natsume Inc. brought Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life to players in the United States (it had come out in Japan a year earlier). Recently, in 2023, a refreshed version called Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life was released on June 27th for Nintendo Switch and other consoles. While the remake isn’t quite as beloved as the original, it’s still a good game and much easier to find.

2003/2004 GameCube Exclusive Game

Originally released as a GameCube exclusive, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life was a well-received game. It earned a Metacritic score of 79 upon release, which was a strong showing for the Story of Seasons series – a franchise that began with the original Harvest Moon in 1996. The recent remake currently has a Metacritic score of 72.

What set both the original Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life and its 2026 remake apart is their focus on a character’s entire life. Most farming simulation games only cover a portion of a character’s journey, but Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life follows a farmer from starting out, through marriage and parenthood, all the way to old age. While other games use similar time-passing mechanics, it’s uncommon in this genre. Back in 2003, the Harvest Moon series wasn’t very popular, but the huge success of Stardew Valley has led to many similar games being released.

Compared to previous games in the Harvest Moon series, this installment puts a greater emphasis on raising livestock and managing a ranch, appealing to players who enjoy that aspect of farm life. In a genre now full of similar games, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life still stands out. It felt fresh in the early 2000s, and remarkably, it continues to feel unique even today, 22 years later, thanks to its distinctive features and gameplay.
