Paramount+ Just Added Wes Craven’s Forgotten Horror Comedy

Wes Craven is a legendary figure in the horror genre. Throughout his 40-year career, he constantly reinvented horror with films like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, creating some of the most famous horror franchises we still know and love today. While Craven is celebrated for his successes, he also made a few lesser-known films, and now Paramount+ is offering a chance to revisit one of his overlooked horror comedies from the 2000s.

I was so excited to finally see Cursed on Paramount+! It came out in 2005 and it’s cool because it brought Wes Craven back together with Kevin Williamson, the writer of Scream. The movie stars Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg as siblings who get attacked by a werewolf in LA. They have to figure out who—or what—did it before they turn into a werewolf! Honestly, it’s a bit of a hidden gem in Craven’s work, but it’s mostly known for how rough the making of it was—lots of reshoots, the studio meddling, and they even had to change it to get a PG-13 rating. It started streaming on March 1st, and I’m really enjoying it!

Wes Craven’s Cursed Is a Hidden Gem Horror Comedy Worth Revisiting

Initially, Cursed appears to be a film best avoided. It flopped at the box office, earning only $29.6 million worldwide despite a $38 million budget, and received very poor reviews – just 18% from critics and 30% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. While it’s not a particularly innovative or high-quality horror film, Cursed is a strangely entertaining disaster and a fascinating, if flawed, piece of Wes Craven’s work, making it worth checking out.

Despite its imperfections, Cursed is a delightfully cheesy horror movie from the 2000s. It’s best enjoyed as a ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ experience. Like Scream, it’s self-aware and doesn’t take itself seriously, playfully poking fun at common horror clichés. The movie is surprisingly charming, and even its famously bad special effects add to its appeal. From start to finish, Cursed is chaotic and packed with memorable, over-the-top moments – think intense werewolf transformations, a wild parking garage scene, and even a werewolf flipping the bird! Ultimately, it’s perfect, ridiculously fun horror for when you just want to switch off your brain and enjoy the ride.

What’s New on Paramount+?

As a horror fan, I was thrilled to see Cursed hit Paramount+ on March 1st! It’s part of a big wave of new content, and they’ve really added some great spooky titles. I can now stream Case 39, Crawl, almost all of the Friday the 13th movies, both versions of Pet Sematary (the ’89 and ’19 ones!), and Pet Sematary II, plus The Ruins. But it’s not just horror – they’ve also added some classics like 21 Jump Street, Good Will Hunting, The Banshees of Inisherin, and White House Down. Definitely a lot to check out!
