‘M3GAN’ Star Allison Williams Says “Sun Never Sets” on the Franchise

Blumhouse Productions has become synonymous with horror films. Starting with successful movies like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister, the studio – founded by Jason Blum – has since launched dozens of popular franchises. A major reason for their success is that Blumhouse films are made on relatively low budgets, making each hit even more impressive. While many of their franchises have started strong, not all have been equally successful.

The movie M3GAN, released in January 2023, started with a small budget but became a big success. Viral clips of the robot character helped it perform well both financially and with critics. This success led to plans for a sequel, M3GAN 2.0, scheduled for 2025, and a spin-off movie called SOULM8TE. However, just before SOULM8TE was due to be released, Universal Pictures removed it from its schedule, and there haven’t been any announcements about its future since.

Even though the franchise has faced some challenges, Allison Williams, who stars in the M3GAN movies, recently told CBR that there’s still reason to be optimistic about future installments. She believes the series resonates with real-world events, which gives hope for its continuation.

I read about AI constantly, and it always makes me think of our movie franchise. When I heard about AI agents and their ability to communicate with each other, I immediately pictured our character, M3GAN, dominating those conversations and essentially terrorizing everyone in that digital space.

Williams recognizes the potential for more stories, but says there haven’t been serious discussions about continuing the M3GAN franchise yet. She confirmed there’s nothing in development right now, but added that she believes there’s always a possibility for the character and her story to continue in the future.

Where Did ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Go Wrong?

Universal Pictures

It seems the saying “too much of a good thing” holds true for M3GAN 2.0, which didn’t live up to expectations. Worldwide box office earnings reached only $39 million, a significant drop from the first film’s $181.8 million. Despite most of the original creative team returning, critics weren’t impressed, giving the sequel a 58% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the 93% positive score of the original M3GAN.

The second M3GAN movie followed a similar path as the Terminator films: while the first movie was primarily horror, the sequel focused more on action. This change in tone might not have appealed to everyone. Also, the timing of the releases was different. The first M3GAN came out in January, a slower movie month, but the sequel debuted in late June, right in the middle of the busy summer blockbuster season.

While the first movie was a huge success, the sequel didn’t do as well. This made Universal Pictures hesitant to release SOULM8ATE. It’s currently unclear if or when fans will be able to see SOULM8ATE or another M3GAN movie.
