As a PlayStation Portal fan, I’m really excited about the new update Sony just released! They’re continuing to improve the handheld, and this one adds a fantastic new 1080p High Quality mode, which should make games look even better. Plus, they’ve tweaked the menus and how everything works to make it smoother and more user-friendly. It’s rolling out to everyone now, so I’m hoping to get it soon!
You’ll soon be able to enjoy smoother, clearer gameplay with 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. Turning this on increases the bitrate, resulting in better visuals and more consistent frame rates. You can find the new 1080p High Quality option in the Max Resolution settings within the Quick Menu. Keep in mind that you’ll need to restart your Remote Play or Cloud Streaming session for the change to take effect.
We’ve made several improvements to the user experience for both existing and new players. Cloud Streaming now features more detailed game information, easier-to-see notifications for game invites and Trophy unlocks, and a better search function. New players, or those without a PlayStation account, will find it easier to sign up thanks to a new QR code login option on the PlayStation Portal, along with a smoother, more intuitive menu system.
PlayStation’s Takuro Fushimi, a product management senior manager, also shared that Cloud Streaming on the PlayStation Portal has seen a 162% increase in use compared to the same time last year, as of January.
We’ve seen a lot of positive activity with PS Portal since our November announcement. In January, the number of people using cloud streaming each month increased by 162% compared to the previous year. Plus, over half of PS Portal users are now subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium, showing they’re really enjoying the cloud gaming experience, according to a recent PlayStation Blog post.
We’re always working to improve the PS Portal based on how players are using it. Today, we’re excited to announce some new features and improvements for all our users.
Cloud Streaming launched in November 2024 as a beta test and has been steadily improving ever since. A significant update in April 2025 added features like sorting and compatibility with the Share button, making it easier to capture screenshots and videos on the handheld device. These captures are automatically saved to the cloud for 14 days and can be accessed and downloaded through the PlayStation App.
Back in January, reports suggested Sony is planning an updated PlayStation Portal. While the core hardware won’t change much, the biggest improvement will be a new OLED screen. Sony hasn’t officially confirmed this new version, but it’s reportedly scheduled to launch later in 2024. Also in January, it was revealed that around two million PlayStation Portals had already been sold in the United States.
