The live-action series One Piece is back on Netflix with its second season, and the show’s creator has discussed his level of involvement in adapting the story. Season two follows Luffy and the Straw Hat crew as they venture into a new and perilous area, introducing many new characters and locations. Fans were particularly surprised by some changes made to the storyline compared to the original anime and manga.
I found it really interesting how One Piece: Into the Grand Line managed to hint at things that would happen later in the story, even before they actually did. It offered a fresh take on everything. When asked about the live-action show on the official Netflix podcast, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, explained that he didn’t want to impose his own ideas on this adaptation, letting it develop naturally.
One Piece Creator Reveals His Influence on Live-Action Story
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, expressed his enjoyment of the live-action adaptation, praising the staff’s work in bringing the story to life. He explained that he’s letting their vision guide the series, as they are fans themselves, and he’s there to support them. While he isn’t dictating the plot, Oda has been instrumental in one significant change to the show this season.
Season two of One Piece really dives into the fantastical side of the story. Eiichiro Oda, the creator, asked the production team to emphasize the franchise’s fantasy elements more this season, after focusing on the characters’ humanity in season one. He felt it was important to prepare viewers for the increasingly bizarre and imaginative world as the story progresses and the Grand Line unfolds.
One Piece’s Changes Have Been Great for Live-Action Series

For the second season, I asked the team to really lean into the fantastical parts of the manga as the story progresses, so Luffy’s battles with stronger enemies would feel believable,” explained Oda. “We need to show audiences the more over-the-top elements of the story now, and that was a deliberate choice.” While Oda has been a major voice in the production of the live-action One Piece series, it appears he has less direct control over the actual storyline.
One of the best things about the live-action One Piece series is how it includes little hints and references to things that happen later in the story. These ‘Easter eggs’ show that the creators are big fans of the original manga, and they highlight how Oda, the author, has been carefully planning these moments for over thirty years. We can expect to see even more of these clever connections as the series goes on.
