Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr. have recaptured the public’s fascination through Love Story.
Although the show features Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly and appears to be based on true events, many key people and details were left out. For example, Carole Radziwill, a friend of Carolyn and former Bravo personality who was married to Anthony Radziwill (played by Eric Bergren), isn’t included in the story.
Producer Brad Simpson explained to TV Insider on March 16th that people have busy lives with many relationships, and sometimes difficult choices have to be made.
Interestingly, Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bassette (played by Sydney Lemmon), ended up with a more significant part in the story, despite Brad often overlooking her.
As a storyteller, one of my biggest challenges is always showing authentic relationships within a limited timeframe. In this case, we really wanted to emphasize the deep bond between the sisters, so when Carolyn needed someone to lean on, it felt natural to make it her sister. It was tough leaving out so many other important people in their lives – we’re trying to fit a lot of life into just 43 minutes, and every moment counts!
Although Bethenny Frankel hasn’t commented on why she’s not involved, she did share her thoughts on Ryan Murphy’s new series. In a February post on her Substack, she said she won’t be watching, but encouraged others to tune in and enjoy the show just like they did originally.

For Carole, it’s been over two decades since the 1999 plane crash took the lives of John, Carolyn, and Lauren. She’s stopped trying to help others understand the true nature of the people she cared for and loved.
She wrote that initially, ensuring their memories were honored felt like her most important purpose, something she was willing to fight for at any cost. She later realized how deeply involved she’d become in the aftermath—particularly in understanding Carolyn. She wished Carolyn could have remained a mystery, but knew that wasn’t possible for her.
Though she has her own memories of her friend Carolyn, she understands that others will have their own views as well.

She wrote that now that everything is said and done, the story continues to be retold, often changing with each telling. It’s embellished with made-up details by people who weren’t involved and aren’t interested in what really happened.
She explained that she’s stopped worrying about how she’s portrayed, whether people misunderstand her, or spread inaccurate stories. She doesn’t react to shallow or overly sentimental depictions of her life, and she’s no longer concerned with whether anyone truly understands who she is.

In the seventh episode, titled “Obsession,” the newly married couple comes home from their honeymoon in Turkey to discover a large group of paparazzi camped outside their apartment in Tribeca, and the photographers refuse to go away.
It was as awful as people said. Carolyn was constantly hounded by photographers, all desperate for a picture of her smiling. When she refused to respond to their intrusive questions – things like whether she was expecting a baby – some of them started calling her names, even using harsh language, just to try and get a reaction.
According to MJ Bettenhausen, as written in Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Carolyn worried that people would lose interest in her after she got married. Bettenhausen felt this was another way Carolyn’s independent spirit was restricted.

Rudy Mance, the costume designer for Love Story, accurately reproduced the full Prada outfit Carolyn wore when she first encountered the paparazzi, just after returning home with John.
The woman’s outfit – a camel-colored pencil skirt, black sweater, knee-high boots, and black tote bag – mirrored her personality: stylish and polished, yet understated.
Mance shared on FX’s Love Story podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz, that getting the props right for that scene was a big effort. They spent a lot of time sourcing items from places like eBay, Japan, Etsy, and Ukraine.

Carolyn was worried, but John tried to handle the situation with the photographers outside their home. He asked them to be respectful of his wife and give her some privacy as she got used to her new life.
According to Beller, he actually did that while Carolyn waited inside the entrance at 20 North Moore Street. He then stated that marriage is a major life change, especially for someone who isn’t used to public attention, and asked everyone to respect Carolyn’s privacy and give her space.
According to Steve Gillon’s 2019 book, American Prince, the brief peace between John F. Kennedy Jr. and the photographers immediately ended when he and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy began walking to their car. The photographers rushed forward, each trying to get a unique photo, and this chaotic scene terrified Carolyn.

Carolyn was thrilled about a potential job at Ralph Lauren and her interview seemed to go perfectly. However, when she left, she discovered a crowd of photographers waiting outside, creating a chaotic scene. Feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed by the intense attention, she sadly decided to withdraw from consideration for the position.
Although there’s no official record of Carolyn Bessette nearly working for him, Ralph Lauren was reportedly very impressed with her style. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he even instructed his design team to keep her in mind with every creation, saying, “Every time you design something, think of Carolyn Bessette.”

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, hosting her at her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.
Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn some heartfelt advice, warning her that, sadly, people wouldn’t give her a second chance. She explained that men could be incredibly hurtful, pushing her to her limits and causing immense pain, and urged her not to let them win.
Ethel arranged for Carolyn to visit her at home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book, The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn to ignore the negativity and stay strong.
According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy once confided that being a member of the Kennedy family came with significant challenges. However, the mother of eleven explained that she eventually realized the key to coping was daily self-affirmation. She would look in the mirror and tell herself, simply, ‘I am enough.’ She found that repeating this message helped her internalize the belief that she was worthy, and that no one – not even the pressures of the Kennedy family – could diminish that sense of self-worth.
Oh, Ethel was SO right! She told Carolyn, and honestly, it stuck with me, that she couldn’t ever lose her cool like that again, especially not in public. Ethel was all, ‘These guys are just looking for a reaction!’ and she warned Carolyn – and it’s like she was talking directly to me – don’t let them bait you into doing something you’ll regret in front of everyone! It was perfect advice, honestly. Carolyn needed to hear that.

As a wedding expert, I totally understand the family dynamics at play here! In the show, Carolyn opens up to her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette, about potentially asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed really upset about being left out of the wedding planning process, and Carolyn wants to make things right by including her in a special way.
Carolyn worries that her sister feels left out. She believes resolving this is important because she doesn’t want any lingering resentment to affect her wedding and marriage.
Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”
John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend fences. His sister had been upset with Carolyn – she blamed Carolyn for a public scene and even questioned whether they should get married. John believed having Carolyn ask Caroline was the best way to resolve the tension.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal issues were interfering with her work, and Calvin admitted he was surprised and a little hurt by the news.
He described her as “a bright light” and reassured her that she’d be well taken care of by Narciso Rodriguez—a former colleague—who would be designing her wedding dress. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.
“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”
In the movie Love Story, Calvin finds out about the dress after seeing photos of Carolyn with Narciso and Caroline. However, in real life, Carolyn actually quit her job before she started seriously planning her wedding.

Oh my gosh, it breaks my heart seeing Ann Freeman—Constance Zimmer is amazing as her, by the way—so worried about Carolyn! She’s convinced Carolyn is losing herself in this marriage, and she tells her daughter privately, which is already so sad. But then, she just has to share her worries with everyone during the rehearsal dinner toast! It’s like she can’t help it, she just wants to protect her daughter, even if it means airing everything in public. I just want to reach through the screen and hug Ann!
Ann described John as overwhelmingly loving and admitted she was concerned for Carolyn. She wondered how anyone could stay grounded around someone with such a powerful personality. Ultimately, Ann hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive when she needs him.
John had a private conversation where he told his future mother-in-law that her daughter means everything to him.
Although the exact words aren’t known, John’s friend Robert Littell wrote in his memoir, The Men We Became, that Ann voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it could be harmful to their daughter.
And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”
Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed long before. This means the romantic scene in the movie Love Story—where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding—was created for dramatic effect and didn’t actually happen.

Carolyn faced a real wardrobe emergency when she discovered Narciso’s dress didn’t have a zipper and would need to be pulled over her head – after her makeup was already finished.
Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that dressing Carolyn was a struggle. She described it as if the dress was flowing like cream over Carolyn’s body, while Narciso frantically tried to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the neckline, and they eventually covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.
Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he also offered a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they’re happy.
In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to completely redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony ultimately began at 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the historic First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles to light the space.

In the fifth episode, John proposes to Carolyn while they’re out on a rowboat. This happens right after she’s met his entire family for the first time in Hyannis Port, including his formidable aunt, Ethel Kennedy, played by Jessica Harper.
Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining that they have several important things to talk over first.
In 1994, Per Beller and John brought Carolyn to the family’s vacation home for Labor Day weekend. John did volunteer for a breakfast duty while they were there, but without asking Carolyn to join him.
Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He playfully told her, “Fishing is so much better with a partner,” when he asked her to marry him.
He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. While on the show, John F. Kennedy Jr. claimed the ring belonged to his mother, the truth is he had it custom-made. He asked Jackie Kennedy’s close friend, Maurice Tempelsman, to design a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring, often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John actually gave Carolyn both rings.
According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before responding to a proposal. While J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book, American Prince, states she didn’t formally accept but was seen wearing a ring and telling friends they were planning a wedding, RoseMarie Terenzio recalled Carolyn telling her they became engaged over the holiday weekend.
Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months before their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn had a close relationship with her boss, Calvin Klein, and was also good friends with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.
In the movie Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) challenges Calvin when he tells her she can’t continue working for him because their relationship is becoming public – spurred by a real New York Post cover announcing JFK Jr.’s proposal – and he fears it will be a distraction.
Honestly, the conversation got pretty heated! Kelly really called Calvin out, saying he was the last person who should be talking about keeping things private. And Calvin just shot back, basically reminding her that she knew what she was getting into from the start. It’s a classic case of past choices coming back to haunt you, isn’t it? Sometimes, we all need a little reminder of the agreements we’ve made.
The designer invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, hinting that this would be their last time together – a clear sign they were breaking up.
Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and were choosing to live apart while continuing to respect each other and resolve any differences privately. Their divorce was finalized ten years later, in 2006.
At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than him.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features a provocative image of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington.
She watched the news from home, understanding John had to deny proposing to her. She didn’t want rumors about her rejecting him to distract from the important news about George.
Carolyn deliberately avoided attending the launch on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for releasing a statement to deny engagement rumors fueled by a photo of Carolyn’s ring, explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her presence would be a distraction. They also claimed she wasn’t bothered by not being there.
John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s public refusal to confirm their engagement. Chermayeff believed this was when Carolyn first realized what their relationship with John would be like – a pattern of him controlling the narrative and dismissing her feelings.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with Carolyn happily accepting John’s marriage proposal, despite their earlier conflict.
Oh my god, I remember it so vividly! The media just went wild over that fight between John and Carolyn on February 25th, 1996, and everything that happened – like him seemingly taking her engagement ring, him sobbing on the curb, the shouting, and her desperately holding onto the dog’s leash while yelling ‘You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!’ – it was all over the news. It felt like we were watching it happen live, ripped straight from the headlines, and I haven’t forgotten a single detail!
The show centers around a fight sparked by John’s frustration over Carolyn rejecting his proposal. He angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just said yes, but they had actually been engaged for around five months. While Carolyn privately tries on the ring and seems receptive when they’re alone, she hadn’t formally accepted his proposal before the argument began.
In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her partner argued because she felt John was being used by his friends.
At a wedding, they found themselves seated beside a reporter from the New York Times who was covering the event for the ‘Vows’ column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that position. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she’d been trying to shield him from being exploited.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.
Although it looked good on television, the real John was often forgetful and frequently lost his keys and wallet. This habit later made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.
Beyond that hint of what’s to come, John doesn’t mention to Carolyn that the party he’s inviting her to is actually a formal birthday dinner for his sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.
When John’s behavior worries Carolyn, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that he’s just forgetful, not intentionally rude or bringing guests over without warning.

John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, the get-together at Carolyn’s Park Avenue apartment was more of a party than a formal dinner.
The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the secure room looking stunning and completely herself, with a warm and spontaneous embrace.
Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a friendly “So nice to meet you,” according to Carole. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.
Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time, reveals that initial impressions of Carolyn and Caroline not getting along were incorrect. Someone who observed them having lunch noted they seemed to genuinely enjoy each other’s company, with lively conversation and plenty of laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to get a date with him. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was shocked and upset that he would believe such a thing, so she left.
After what felt like forever, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.
According to Beller, John did receive a letter outlining alleged details about Carolyn’s social life and relationships, but it happened relatively early in their dating history. The book states that after they dated in the summer of 1992, John abruptly ended things after reading the letter. Carolyn then didn’t accept his apologies for over a year.

The new series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette opens with Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advising Annette Bening (played by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer chose for her.
It’s unknown if she created the look for future Mrs. Warren Beatty, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was the preferred salesperson for Calvin Klein’s celebrity clients, such as Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.
According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she expertly helped customers choose clothes, offering advice on what suited them and how to create complete outfits. He noted that she generated millions of dollars in clothing sales over the years.
In a memorable scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her sharp instincts by advising Calvin (Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.
Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give him her phone number, reminding him that he can reach her at work.
“He was simply bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub as Michael Bergin, whom they playfully called the “sexy doorman” and who was also sometimes her boyfriend, arrived.
Okay, so picture this: John just appears at Calvin Klein, completely out of the blue, and requests a private fitting with Carolyn. Then, he has the nerve to ask her to dinner! Honestly, when he left, her coworkers completely lost it – it was total chaos! As someone who’s seen a lot in this industry, let me tell you, a surprise like that can really shake things up.
According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. John was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. He then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, according to her friend MJ Bettenhausen, who spoke with Beller. However, Carolyn initially thought another woman was John’s date and, feeling frustrated, turned down his invitation to an after-party.

Carolyn and Michael, a former hotel doorman and model, briefly dated starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship was mostly on-and-off, according to Beller’s account.
Beller noted that many of Carolyn’s friends doubted Bergin’s assertion in his 2004 book, The Other Man, that he continued a sexual relationship with her—not only after she met John, but throughout the rest of her life.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. After about 20 minutes, just as she’s about to leave, he arrives riding his bicycle.
He accidentally leaves the car unlocked, and when they return from their long date, they discover it’s been stolen. This means he ends up walking Carolyn home instead.
He said he wished he hadn’t felt so rushed as they reached her doorstep. She asked what he meant, and he kissed her. He then wondered if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d enjoyed their evening together before ending the date.
Okay, so I’ve pieced together that they did actually go on a first date, like, in real life! Apparently, John might have biked and been a little late – totally relatable, honestly. But everything else? That whole adorable scene of them connecting over drinks? I’m convinced it was staged for the show. It’s just too perfect, you know? They’re soulmates, and the showrunners knew it! I’ve analyzed every frame, and it’s all part of the narrative, I swear!

Daryl Hannah (played by Dree Hemingway) is at John’s apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen), that all he wants to do is call Carolyn.
He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993—his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s—despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy’s, objections. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers from a tabloid that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.
John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and during a chance encounter at an event, he confessed he was struggling because he believed she disliked him. Carolyn responded that she didn’t know him well enough to feel that way.
The unexpected meeting was a striking way to introduce the star of Splash in Love Story, but producers didn’t consult with Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.
Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding characters deeply. She said it’s difficult to push specific storylines when interviewing the people those characters are based on, so they generally avoid doing that unless absolutely necessary.
According to Jacobson, Daryl often creates conflict with what the story needs to happen, but the writers still make sure to portray her as someone who understands and navigates the celebrity world better than Carolyn does.

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that major changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, forcing him to think about what he truly desires.
Daryl promised she would return for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, someone asked him for an autograph, causing him to drop the leash. Tragically, Hank was then struck and killed by a taxi. John subsequently flew to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.
According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, shared that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic in Central Park in May 1994 after getting off his leash and was struck by a car.
According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly declined. He felt angry that Daryl had made him attend the dog’s funeral when his mother was seriously ill with cancer.
In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, and then collapses at home. This scene was created to be dramatic, but it also emphasizes how severely ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.

John and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other since the disastrous gala until they ran into each other again at a fundraiser on May 18, 1992.
They connected immediately and dated all summer, but eventually drifted apart for nearly two years, as described in Beller’s book. It wasn’t until after Jackie’s passing that they finally became a lasting couple.
According to executive producer Brad Simpson, the couple’s relationship had more ups and downs than the show could realistically portray. They felt it was necessary to move the story forward and believed viewers wouldn’t be interested in watching the repeated breaking up and getting back together.
