Samira Wiley Pulls Out of Broadway Show Due to Medical Condition

Samira Wiley is prioritizing her health.

An actress known for her role in Orange is the New Black has had to leave the upcoming Broadway production of Proof because of a health problem that hasn’t been made public.

On March 17th, the show’s producers announced that Samira had to leave the series because of a medical condition that requires her complete focus. They expressed their full support and wished the actress, known for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale, all the best.

Kara Young will be joining the cast of the show, taking on the role of Claire alongside Ayo Edebiri, Don Cheadle, and Jin Ha.

TopMob News has reached out to Samira’s rep for additional comment but has not yet heard back.

This news follows a difficult time in Samira’s personal life. She and her wife, Lauren Morelli, filed for divorce earlier this year after almost ten years of marriage. The couple share a four-year-old daughter named George Elizabeth.

The couple announced on January 29th that they have decided to divorce after nine years of marriage. They stated that they will continue to be committed to raising their children together as co-parents.

Lauren and her partner first met while working on the set of Orange is the New Black, where Lauren was a producer. They got married in 2017, and after having their daughter, Samira shared how challenging their journey to have a baby had been for their relationship.

In 2021, Samira told Entertainment Tonight that the challenges they faced trying to conceive actually helped them strengthen their relationship and have important conversations they might not have otherwise had. She explained she often thought about wanting to create a loving and supportive environment for their child, because she believes many babies are born into families that aren’t fully prepared.

Even though the couple split up, they always agreed that raising their daughter was the most important thing.

As a long-time supporter of all families, I always hear Samira say something that really resonates with me: before you even think about starting a family – whether you’re a same-sex couple or not – focus on building a strong, loving relationship with your partner. She’s so right – that child you bring into the world deserves a secure and loving home, and that security comes from the foundation of love you build together. It’s all about creating that safe, comfortable space for them to grow up in.

She didn’t share her diagnosis until 2025, when she revealed on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with the condition for over ten years.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed a troubling pattern: so many of us are taught from a young age that period pain is just something we have to endure as women. It’s like we’re conditioned to suffer in silence, believing it’s normal to struggle with something that affects half the population. But honestly, it doesn’t have to be that way, and we shouldn’t be dealing with this alone.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she’d been hospitalized for a hernia. This happened because she’d been wearing pants that were too tight, which caused a gap to form in her abdominal muscles.

He acknowledged that pain is often temporary, explaining that his body has some minor imperfections and isn’t quite functioning as it should.

Let me tell you, dealing with sudden pain is never fun. Recently, I ended up having to crawl to the hospital because my back pain was absolutely unbearable. It flared up during a road trip with a friend, and honestly, it was pretty scary. I just want to share that sometimes, even when you’re trying to enjoy life, your body can throw you a curveball.

He compared the feeling to having had a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its often negative side, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier,” Schumer was surprised when doctors began commenting on interviews, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome due to high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted her to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections for procedures like a breast reduction and C-section. Without the online comments, she wouldn’t have connected the injections to her condition. She was relieved to learn her case of Cushing syndrome would resolve on its own and that she was otherwise healthy, calling it “the greatest news imaginable.”

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin. She suddenly started having stroke-like symptoms, initially unable to respond when Justin asked if she was okay. She then realized she couldn’t speak and the right side of her face began to droop.

Although her speech and facial movement eventually returned, Hailey went to the hospital where doctors discovered she’d had a small blood clot in her brain, which they identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack).

Further testing at UCLA revealed Hailey had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Doctors determined the blood clot had traveled to her heart, passed through the hole, and caused the TIA.

Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now doing well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the remaining dates of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained the virus affected nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it was becoming increasingly difficult to eat. Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away.

Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well and feeling much better. She described the situation as scary and unexpected, but expressed gratitude that he was going to be okay.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the serious health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. He explained that while in Atlanta, he suffered a severe headache and asked for aspirin, but then lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next twenty days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

After surgery, twenty days later on May 4th, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for extensive rehabilitation and therapy.

He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers he received, saying, “I needed every prayer.”

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the series, she experienced a sudden, severe headache while at the gym. She described collapsing and being violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan quickly revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain – resulting from a ruptured aneurysm. Clarke underwent immediate surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak coherently.

Though the aphasia eventually passed and she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery. This procedure was unsuccessful, leading to a major bleed and a dire prognosis. Doctors had to perform a more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Clarke is now fully recovered and says she’s “at a hundred per cent.”

She faced a confusing array of diagnoses and conflicting advice from different doctors.

Determined to find answers, Shailene, who prefers to keep her specific condition private, combined traditional medical care with holistic and herbal remedies. This search for well-being lasted for ten years.

She explained that the physical discomfort led to deeper issues, including fear of food and struggles with body image, identity, and feeling comfortable in her own body.

Ultimately, Shailene’s health improved, and she is now very healthy and happy to say she has resolved the issues she faced.
