11 Years Ago, The Most Adult Power Rangers Reboot Ever Debuted

The Power Rangers are making a big comeback! With a new live-action series coming to Disney+, a fresh set of comics from BOOM! Studios planned for this year, and rumors of a movie at Paramount, there’s a lot in store for fans. This makes it a great time to remember another important moment in the franchise’s history – 11 years ago, when Power Rangers got its most mature and revamped series yet.

In 2015, while the Power Rangers TV series was airing its Dino Charge season – a popular favorite with fans – a unique project arrived online. Director Joseph Kahn, with producers Adi Shankar and Jil Hardin, released the short film Power/Rangers, a gritty and surprisingly mature take on the franchise. The film featured a talented cast and sparked some debate among Power Rangers fans, but it quickly gained attention. You can watch the full short film here.

The Power/Rangers Film Delivered The Most Gritty and Adult Version of the Franchise Ever

The short film Power/Rangers, created by Shankar and Hardin, made a big splash when it was released, largely because of its darker and more realistic approach to the Power Rangers story, and its impressive cast. The film featured the late James Van Der Beek as Rocky, and he even co-wrote it alongside Kahn and Dutch Southern. Other cast members included Katee Sackhoff as Kimberly, Russ Bain as Tommy, Gichi Gamba as Zack, Yves Bright as Billy, Camilla Lim as Trini, and Stevin Knight as Jason.

This installment of the Power Rangers story features a devastating defeat for the team. After a fierce battle where they used both their usual powers and powerful weapons, the Megazord was destroyed by the Machine Empire. A peace treaty was then signed between Earth and the Empire, leading to the disbanding of the Power Rangers.

The story unfolds through memories shared in a conversation between Rocky, now working with the Machine Empire, and Kimberly, the former Pink Ranger, who has been captured. Rocky is questioning her about Tommy’s location, and through their conversation, we learn how each of the Rangers met their end. Rocky believes Tommy is responsible for the deaths. We see Jason tragically killed by gunfire just eight hours after his wedding to Kimberly, and it’s revealed that Bulk and Skull betrayed them, hoping to get better drugs.

Whether you’re seeing it for the first time or revisiting it, this film is well worth watching. It has a fantastic twist at the end that completely changes how you view everything that happened before – I won’t give it away! When it was released, several of the original Power Rangers actors praised it for tackling more mature themes and a more serious tone, something fans have been hoping for in the Power Rangers series for years.

However, not everyone liked the show’s increased violence and darker tone. The Power Rangers fanbase was also divided on the issue. Some viewers believe this new direction doesn’t suit the show’s core identity, while others think it’s a welcome change the franchise needed.

Following this release, we’ve seen other Power Rangers stories like Shattered Grid, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return, and Darkest Hour. These all explored more mature themes and a darker tone than previous installments, but none went as far as this new version. It will be fascinating to see where the Power Rangers franchise goes next and whether it will revisit this more adult approach in the future.
