Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen brought Yuji Itadori and Yuta Okkotsu back into focus, and the voice actors discussed sharing the lead roles. The new season begins after the events of the Shibuya Incident, with Yuji feeling lost and without support. Fortunately, Yuta returned to help, but they first had to face off in a significant battle.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, voice actors Kayleigh McKee (Yuta) and Adam McArthur (Yuji) discussed performing together in Jujutsu Kaisen‘s third season. They explained how they connected with the unique energies creator Gege Akutami built into their characters, which helped them portray Yuta and Yuji as distinct individuals, all while enjoying a friendly rivalry.
Jujutsu Kaisen Stars Talk Yuji vs. Yuta
When asked about joining the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise, McKee explained that he hadn’t read the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 prequel manga and was surprised by the scope of his role as Yuta. He initially thought he was recording a small part – he even finished the audition in about 15 minutes! – until his agent informed him that Yuta was actually the main character of the movie and an important figure in the larger series. This realization motivated him to prepare even more thoroughly, feeling as though he’d been preparing for the role all along.
McKee explained that he’s enjoying the process and striving to accurately portray the distinct ‘main character energy’ of each role. He noted that the characters feel different because they were created at different points in the author’s development of the story’s world. McArthur agreed, clarifying there wasn’t any rivalry between the actors to be seen as the true lead. He added that while he’s always been competitive, he now prefers to view it as a friendly challenge and simply have fun with the work.
Who Is Jujutsu Kaisen’s Real Main Character?

I don’t really focus on winning or losing; I just enjoy the challenge of competing. Kaylee and I often playfully joke about who’s the better host. I’ve made videos joking about people suggesting Yuta should be the host, even acting out scenarios like playfully ‘launching’ them. But it’s all in good fun – there’s no real rivalry. Coming back for season three, I was most excited to see Yuta and Yuji finally working as a team, because I think that makes for a really compelling dynamic. I’ve been thinking about what qualities make a great lead character, and that’s what I find interesting.
McArthur points out that Yuji’s popularity as a powerful character draws people in, which is always enjoyable to watch. However, he also believes there’s something particularly appealing about a relatable, ordinary protagonist suddenly thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Seeing this ‘everyday person’ struggle against the odds makes audiences really want to support him, making for a compelling central character.
