Netflix has completely reshaped how people watch movies and TV, and how those stories are made. The company’s vast resources allow filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro to bring ambitious projects like Frankenstein to life – projects that can win awards despite not being huge commercial successes. But with technology constantly improving, viewers are often watching cutting-edge films and shows on their phones, sometimes without even fully paying attention.
During interviews for their new Netflix film, The Rip, Matt Damon said Netflix has a rule requiring filmmakers to periodically remind audiences of the plot to help those who get lost. However, Netflix executives have denied this claim. According to Variety, Dan Lin, Netflix’s head of film, stated directly, “There is no such principle.”
Over the years, Damon’s ideas have sparked a lot of discussion and speculation, and he’s one of the few movie directors to openly talk about them. This year’s Oscars even featured a humorous sketch where Conan O’Brien and Sterling K. Brown reimagined a famous scene from Casablanca to fit Netflix’s content guidelines, repeatedly explaining the plot as they acted it out.
Everyone found that moment at the Oscars funny, but the idea that it represents a rule we follow is incorrect, according to Lin. He explained that they avoid repeating storylines in their films and TV shows, and he wasn’t sure where that suggestion originated. He emphasized that their priority is always creating high-quality movies.
Damon divulged this information back in January on The Joe Rogan Experience:
Traditionally, action movies are structured around three major action sequences. There’s one early on to kick things off, another midway through to raise the stakes, and a final, massive sequence at the end. Filmmakers usually invest the biggest part of their budget in that final set piece, making it a spectacular climax with lots of explosions.
These days, networks want immediate excitement – a major event within the first few minutes – to grab viewers’ attention. They also suggest repeatedly reminding the audience of the story, since many people are distracted by their phones while watching.
Netflix’s head of content, Bela Bajaria, responded to Damon’s idea by saying she found it insulting to creatives and filmmakers. She questioned how anyone would think Netflix would give such a poor suggestion and that a creator would simply accept it.
Even if the claims about strict rules aren’t completely accurate, many movies and shows on Netflix do feel very similar in style and how they’re made, which is why Damon’s comments seemed so plausible. Interestingly, Damon’s co-star Affleck pointed out that Netflix’s biggest successes, like the series Adolescence, often break those supposed “rules.” In a way, Affleck actually supported the idea that Netflix executives had, and encouraging unique stories could benefit everyone involved.

I’ve noticed a pattern with Matt Damon – he often shares stories about potential roles he almost took, and they don’t always quite line up with what others remember! He recently mentioned being offered the lead in Avatar, which would have been a massive paycheck for him. But James Cameron actually clarified that while they did discuss it, Damon was already committed to making more Jason Bourne movies at the time. It’s just another example of a fun story getting a little bit adjusted by the facts.
