As the release date for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” nears on the movie screens, director Matt Shakman has shared insights into his decision to make Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, the primary antagonist in his production. During a recent interview, this renowned filmmaker discussed his reasons for incorporating this cosmic, god-like entity as Marvel’s First Family makes their debut in the MCU.
Matt Shakman on introducing Galactus to MCU in Fantastic Four
In a recent conversation, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker shared why he positioned Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, as the main adversary in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Or, more casually:
The director behind The Fantastic Four: First Steps revealed why Galactus, played by Ralph Ineson, was chosen as the main villain in the movie.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Matt Shakman revealed to Deadline his decision to pit Galactus against Franklin Richards, the offspring of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, in his upcoming film was driven by their epic confrontation that promises an unforgettable spectacle.
In simpler terms, Galactus is a well-known antagonist not just for the Fantastic Four but also across Marvel Comics. He’s essentially the largest entity in the cosmos, as huge as a thousand feet tall. This colossal cosmic figure was referred to as a vampire by Shakman. When discussing why Galactus was included in the Fantastic Four movie, Shakman expressed his fascination with the concept of the oldest, most powerful being in the universe clashing with the smallest and newest entity, which is a baby named Franklin. This idea served as the initial inspiration for introducing Galactus into the storyline.
In a new Marvel Studios movie snippet, we see the Fantastic Four meeting Galactus who demanded Franklin as a trade for halting his assault on Earth. Some fans speculate that Galactus seeks Franklin because of his ability to manipulate reality, but we’ll learn more about his true intentions once the film is released.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently on track to premiere in theaters on July 25, 2025.
