In 1980, Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall teamed up to create Amblin Entertainment, a move that helped produce some of the greatest science fiction films ever made. These three influential filmmakers are known for iconic franchises like Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and Star Wars, among others. While not all of their films are released under the Amblin name, here’s a ranking of their seven best sci-fi movies, from least to most impressive.
Amblin Entertainment has created a wide range of beloved films, not just science fiction. They’re responsible for franchises like Gremlins, The Goonies, The Land Before Time, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Twister, The Mask of Zorro, and many others, proving the breadth of their work. Still, Amblin is particularly known for its memorable sci-fi movies, and here’s a look at the best ones.
7) War of the Worlds

Steven Spielberg’s 2005 version of War of the Worlds is often considered the most successful adaptation of the original story. Starring Tom Cruise, the film presents a realistic and intense alien invasion, a departure from earlier, more over-the-top movies like Independence Day. Despite being science fiction, many consider it Spielberg’s most frightening film.
6) Minority Report

Steven Spielberg demonstrated his continued talent for science fiction with the 2002 film Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise. This film then led to his work on War of the Worlds. Considered the best adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story after Blade Runner, Minority Report tackles a deeply complicated ethical dilemma using the sci-fi genre. Tom Cruise gives a strong performance, and the film is particularly noteworthy for its original and intriguing concept, making it a standout even compared to War of the Worlds.
5) Men in Black

The Men in Black movies are unique in how well they recreate the magic of Ghostbusters, and the first film is almost as good. The original 1997 movie perfectly captures the spirit of the 90s and is incredibly entertaining. Will Smith delivers some of his best comedic work, the alien creatures are unforgettable, and the chemistry between Smith and Tommy Lee Jones is brilliant. Plus, Vincent D’Onofrio gives a surprisingly fantastic performance that has stuck with audiences ever since.
4) E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Steven Spielberg is famous for many classic movies, but E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial from 1982 remains one of his most beloved. This heartwarming alien story features groundbreaking special effects, unforgettable performances from its young actors, and a truly distinctive visual style. It also managed to make a potentially scary alien creature incredibly endearing – a feat that still amazes viewers today.
3) Back to the Future Part II

Okay, so Back to the Future Part II from 1989… it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original, but honestly, it’s still a sci-fi classic. What I loved is how it takes the already awesome concept of time travel and flips it, sending Marty to the future instead of the past. Seriously, after seeing this one, you’ll feel like the first movie isn’t fully complete without it. It’s a perfect example of how to do a sequel right – it’s funny, clever, and a brilliant time travel story all wrapped into one. A total masterclass!
2) Jurassic Park

Released in 1993, Jurassic Park stands out because it uses science fiction to revive the past, rather than predict the future. The idea of a dinosaur theme park is incredibly engaging, and director Steven Spielberg, along with writers Michael Crichton and David Koepp, brought it to life flawlessly. The film brilliantly combines an exciting premise with deeper themes, and features some of the most stunning visuals in Spielberg’s career.
1) Back to the Future

Although Steven Spielberg established Amblin Entertainment, the studio’s most celebrated science fiction film was directed by Robert Zemeckis. Released in 1985, Back to the Future is widely considered a flawless movie. It’s both a product of its time and eternally appealing, consistently funny, remarkably smart, and instantly recognizable. The film spawned a huge franchise and continues to be the most famous time travel movie ever made, demonstrating its lasting influence on popular culture.
Back to the Future cleverly uses time travel to examine the fascinating idea of children encountering their parents as teenagers. Beyond the simple sci-fi premise, the film boasts perfect casting, remarkable special effects makeup, and stunning production design for its time. While Amblin Entertainment has produced many excellent films, Back to the Future stands out as their best.
