The creators of the Daredevil: Born Again series have spoken about why Luke Cage and Iron Fist haven’t appeared so far. The show is aiming to be a full continuation of the Marvel Netflix universe, starting with Daredevil and Kingpin. While Punisher was featured in Season 1 and Jessica Jones will return in Season 2, it’s still uncertain if Luke Cage and Iron Fist will join the series in the future.
Sana Amanat, an executive producer, and Dario Scardapane, the showrunner of Daredevil: Born Again, recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about Jessica Jones’ reappearance in the new season and clarified why Luke Cage and Iron Fist won’t be appearing alongside her.
Amanat believes it’s crucial to make the most of their time and ensure every character has a clear purpose within the story.
We need to make the most of our limited time by carefully considering each character’s background, motivations for being here, and their history within this world, so we can establish them realistically.
Scardapane pointed out that with only eight episodes, a show quickly feels cramped, making it difficult to fully develop all the characters.
With only eight episodes per season, we quickly find ourselves limited in how many characters and stories we can explore. Sana and I have both been huge fans of J.J. Abrams for a long time.
When directly asked about the possibility of a Defenders team-up in the upcoming Born Again series, particularly with Season 3 already being filmed, Scardapane avoided giving a clear answer, stating, “It’s not really my decision.”
It’s not my decision who’s involved. Jessica is here because she’s incredibly talented, and this story will show you exactly why. Hopefully, I handled that question well!
Let’s talk about why Jessica Jones will be appearing in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, but Luke Cage and Iron Fist won’t. According to the show’s creator, Krysten Ritter’s character was considered from the very beginning of the season’s planning.
Jessica has been involved from the very beginning. Because this story focuses on vigilantes who are now the ones being hunted – the underdogs – it’s fascinating to explore her role within that dynamic, and it’s incredibly inspiring as a writer.
He mentioned that Jessica Jones’s life includes compelling stories he’d like to explore within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he also complimented the strong chemistry between Krysten Ritter and Charlie Cox.
What really grabbed me about this project was seeing where these characters ended up after their Netflix series wrapped. Jessica Jones, especially, has been through a lot, and it was fascinating to see how those experiences shaped her. But honestly, the real magic is the chemistry between Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter – their playful back-and-forth is just fantastic, and we absolutely had to capture that energy.
Recent statements from Scardapane have intensified speculation that her character will be married to Luke Cage when she appears in the upcoming Disney+ series, even if Luke Cage himself doesn’t rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe immediately.
The person in charge of Disney+ shows has said they’re considering ways to reintroduce heroes like Iron Fist and Luke Cage into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, they emphasized that any return would need to be justified by the story and feel truly significant.
I Think Luke Cage & Iron Fist Are in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3

Marvel Studios seems to be strategically reintroducing the heroes from the old Netflix shows into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Daredevil: Born Again. The plan is to gradually bring them back before potentially sending them off into larger storylines. We saw the first step with the Punisher in Season 1, and now he’s getting his own Disney+ special and will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Jon Bernthal has assured fans that his version of Frank Castle will remain true to form.
Fans are seeing Jessica Jones again after a nearly seven-year hiatus since her Netflix show concluded in 2019. While her long-term future is still uncertain, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum has suggested a new series featuring the character might happen “sooner than you think.”
If current trends continue, we might see Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand return in the third and fourth seasons of Born Again. There’s especially strong possibility for Luke Cage to appear next, as Colter recently told TopMob he’s been in discussions with Marvel about playing the character again.
There’s a good chance Danny Rand, the former Iron Fist, will reappear soon. Finn Jones mentioned last year he’d returned to martial arts training, suggesting a comeback. However, his show wasn’t as popular as the others in the Netflix Marvel series, leading to speculation that Marvel might eventually recast the Iron Fist role with a different actor.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about the possibility of seeing Daredevil team up with the Defenders again, maybe in a future season of Born Again as Dario Scardapane has suggested. But honestly, it has to feel natural and make sense for the story. At its heart, this is Daredevil’s show, and I’d hate to see other heroes added just for the sake of it – it needs to enhance his story, not overshadow it.
